There are many traditions that go into an American wedding. My family had the pleasure of attending the wedding of Marvin and Emily Murphy in October of this year. The bride Emily and my family have known each other for the past four years, we attend church together.

In the American culture one of the most important traditions among women is the engagement. Woman are so interested in the love story behind the couple and how romantic the event is. Emily met her groom through a mutual friend. Marvin and Emily hit it off immediately. They started dating and did so for about three years prior to him asking her to marry him. Emily had decided to have a fall country wedding. Her wedding was to be the colors of fall with oranges, yellows, browns and reds. At this point she decided to have a maid of honor, two bridesmaids and flower girl and ring barer. The groom had a best man and two groomsmen. The maid of honor and best man are to be a person who is your very best friend. The bridesmaids and groomsmen are to be close relatives or friends. These roles in the wedding are to be a helper to the bride prior to her wedding and on her wedding day. This is a deep rooted tradition with many Americans. Depending on the amount of family and friends a person has will determine the amount of maids helping with the bride. Emily had chosen her sister and two nieces to be her maid of honor and brides maids. Marvin, the groom, chose to have his brother as his best man and two friends to be his groomsmen. Since they had chosen their wedding party it was time for the wedding party to find clothing to wear. As with the wedding dress this can be a long drawn out process finding the perfect dress for the women and the perfect attire for the men. In walked the groom, the best man and grooms men to stand in front of the arch. The music started to play a traditional wedding march ensemble. Looking to the door of the tent in walked the maid of honor, brides maids, flower girl and ring barer. After everyone in the wedding party took their places in walked the beautiful bride.

Emily walked with her father in her beautiful white gown to the front of the arch down the isle. There is nothing sweeter than watching two people in love about to get married. In that moment they seemed me to be the two happiest people on earth confessing their love to one another.

The ceremony was a traditional Christian ceremony. Generally, in our church where Emily and I attend it is a different type of ceremony. As Latter Day Saint Mormon we generally marry in one of the temples. However, Emily did not marry a member of our church so they could not wed in an LDS temple.
