For those of you that don’t know, I am Trey Rongisch and I am currently a student at Midland University. It is quite ironic how Nick and I first met, it was during my first college class. I would have never expected him to ask me to be his Best Man at his wedding in the short span of four months, but when he asked me, I just couldn’t turn down the offer. But I’m going to be honest, I’ve been feeling quite nervous about giving this speech for some time. But I’m pleased to say last night I slept like a baby – I woke up every two hours, crying my eyes out. With this in mind, I am ready to get this speech going and I must share how honored I am to be here today and speak on behalf of Nick and his beautiful wife, Katie.

Being married is not always easy, there will be times when you cannot get along with your spouse. This brings me to my other element, Positivity… Nick shows positivity to the people around them buy always looking for the good even when there is no good. For those purposes, I look at him as not only a good friend, but also a father figure. He has proven to me time and time again that whenever I am around him, I will surely learn something new, but of all the things he has shared with me, I will never forget the moment when Nick told me that he was going to propose to Katie and that if she would say yes to him, his dream would come true. I was beyond excited for the future of Nick and soon to be wife, Katie.
In my short life, I have learned that some marriages are like a walk in the park… Jurassic Park, but surely Nick and Katie’s marriage will be different, because in my eyes, they are perfect for each other. I find this marriage very unique because there are 7.125 billion people in this world and fundersandfounder.com shared that everyone in this room will come in contact with about 80,000 of them, but yet you two found each other. I believe that Katie is very lucky to have a guy like Nick, and Nick is very lucky to have a girl like Katie. I could not be any happier for this perfect
Now this was the first time Jordan and Nick came into contact with one another, and it is said that the first impressions are extremely important. However, for a strong moral person like Nick, his reaction is surprising when he simply states, "I enjoyed looking at her."(pg. 27 ln 23)This is a sign of his first stages of development, which will soon result into what the author intended.
Nick enjoyed going out in public with Jordan since she was a famous athlete. Yet Nick finally realizes she is not in love with her due to her dishonesty. Jordan is egocentric of her reputation as seen in her cheating scandal when she used her superiority to display her win as a fait accompli, even though she evidently cheated. Thus, Jordan lies to get away from her problems and keep her reputation spotless. Fitzgerald juxtaposes Nick with Jordan, “She was incurably dishonest. She wasn’t able to endure being at a disadvantage and...in order to keep that cool smile, insolent smile turned to the world and yet satisfy the demands of her hard, jaunty body...Dishonesty in a woman is a thing you never blame deeply--I was casually sorry, and then I forgot...I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known” (Fitzgerald 58-59). Even if Nick is fastidious about Jordan and her imperfections, he is still fond of her due to her physical attributes. Nick was intrigued about her physical appearance, being with her due to her reputation, and hedonistically attracted towards her. On the other hand, Nick has evidently proven he has moral values such as honesty. Nick has been honest throughout the novel and evidently he has a sense of self-worth since he has never doubted himself for his opinions or his actions. Throughout the novel, Nick has evidently displayed personal integrity and a sense of right or wrong unlike the
Why would he help Daisy have an affair if he was such an honorable gentleman? One reason he might’ve helped Gatsby and Daisy was because he knew Tom was an awful husband and person and Tom and Daisy’s marriage was unhealthy. He thought that Daisy deserved better and Gatsby could give her better than Tom. Another reason was because of the advice his father gave him. “Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.” Nick is a pretty tolerant person and tries not to judge people. Because of this he doesn’t say anything to Tom about his promiscuity or to Gatsby about his infatuation with Daisy. It’s also the reason he sees Jordan. She’s obviously dishonest but he overlooks it as a way of being tolerant. This is another reason why everyone likes him, he doesn’t say anything about their bad deeds. This is not one of his best traits. Its good to be tolerant in some cases, but Nick can sometimes act as an enabler. His tolerance can also lead him to awkward situations. For example, he could’ve pushed harder to leave when Tom invited him to spend the day with him, Myrtle, and the others, but he doesn’t want to judge Tom so he stays. This happens again when he spends the afternoon with Gatsby and Daisy after they first reunited. Although, at the end of the book Nick becomes tired of being tolerant of things he doesn’t agree
In regards to Nick’s reliability and effectiveness in his role as the narrator, I believe that he is entirely qualified and that it was the most effective way to narrate the novel. First of all, he lives right next door to Gatsby which allows him to assist Gatsby due to his close proximity. In addition, Nick is Daisy’s second cousin once removed so he can closely observe the relationship between her and Gatsby. Since he is a secondary character and not Gatsby himself, his emotions are not as affected by Daisy’s or Tom’s actions. His nonpartisan perspective and understanding personality is stated in the beginning of the book. “…I’m inclined to reserve all judgments, a habit that has opened up many curious natures to me…” (1) However, he is close to these characters so he can also give insight to the audience and has many intrusions throughout the story. Even though Nick is supposed to simply be a character in the book, it hints that he is also the author of the book and has an omniscient point of view. He also makes the audience feel as if he is speaking directly to them and simply retelling a story from the summer he spent with Gatsby.
His opinions were never spoken, and no one asked for them. This characteristic about him never changed throughout the story. Nick changed in a different way, mostly involving his emotions towards Gatsby’s actions when he attempting to get Daisy back. He started partying more which then led to him drinking more in his life than he ever has before. As he got more involved with Gatsby’s situation he became more annoyed and frustrated with it. Gatsby always talked to him about it and would never leave him alone. He got pushed into awkward positions like the argument in the hotel (page 133,134,135). Nick was emotionally drained towards the end of the book, and could not deal with the drama he had became involved

Before I finish, I would like to offer my own advice for a happy and successful marriage, now just because I’m not married or never have been it doesn’t mean to say I am now not an expert on it.
Nick is straightforward and forth coming. He is more formal than the other characters which shows his higher level of intelligence. Unlike George, when Nick speaks, he seems to have little personality.
