The United States Postal Service (USPS) is an independent agency of the United States Federal Government responsible for providing postal service in the United States, including its insular areas and associated states. Volume of first class mail peaked and has declined due to the increasing use of email and the World Wide Web for correspondence and business transactions. Based on these results, there is an urgent need to reform the way the USPS is doing business by taking advantage of modernizing technologies to process their mail faster and more efficiently, getting into the e-business, and increasing service to avoid additional losses in future years.

Email delivery is fast, convenient, and cheaper than conventional mail. Changes that could be used to keep up with the advanced world could be sending package updates and digital notifications for customers. The internet has played an important role in our daily life by offering communication and is said for the USPS to “get into the e-business. More people are emailing? So meet their needs. Give every American an email address when they’re born” (Source A). An example of an improvement for the USPS is the idea of digital stamps where a user can text a pre-set number and receive a code to write on their envelope in place of a physical stamp. Therefore, the post office would save on the cost of printing adhesive paper stamps and customers can easily buy stamps without having to go to the post office for them. Another example is to convert snail-mail letters into PDFs to be viewed online. The USPS can also communicate through email by sending customers images of their mail or packages. They should not drop from six- to five-day delivery (Source A), instead they should go the other way to all seven days. It seems counterintuitive to add service when you’re losing money, but people have lost faith in the system precisely because of spotty service. Although emails have several advantages, including speed and low cost, mails do have a major advantage: the sentimental value that every letter contains. It is said that mail delivery will never go away as it unites Americans to a strong tradition of sending a person touch. The USPS will still be at a need even if the world will change. The personal touch of a handwritten letter makes it a valuable way to communicate by relishing the feeling of receiving a personalized letter, “email is fast and simple, but to me an old-fashioned handwritten letter has value in this speed-obsessed world (Source F).” Although emails are quick and fast, the tradition of the United States is sending handwritten letters. The letters are different from emails and by expressing thoughts and feelings on something one can touch and feel and smell. Handwritten letters sent through the mail share that the letter you receive are the workings of a unique individual. It shows the way they speak, their unique handwriting and their true feelings.
