How is it that during a time of overwhelming hate people can find the capacity to recover so quickly and spring back into shape? Throughout history and literature we’ve seen a theme of good vs. evil. We see this theme in Anne Frank: the Diary of a Young Girl as well as Dear Miss Breed. During World War II, the two groups of people that dealt with discrimination, hate, and getting taken from their homes were Japanese-Americans and most european Jews. Based on the texts I believe that the best way to respond to conflict is through resilience; this allows people to overcome obstacles and be optimistic during systemic oppression. One other thing that is mentioned is how the soldiers dealt with having to tell these people this is your new neighborhood, these are your new neighbors, and this is your new living quarters. Sociologist, Don Eberson, who at the time worked at post as a War Relocation Authority said “But nothing mitigated the moment when I had to take them to their new homes...You’d have to take these people into this dingy excuse for a room...These were people who’d left everything behind, sometimes fine houses. I learned after the first day not to enter with the family, but to stand outside and wait.” he continues on with “It was too terrible to witness the pain in people’s faces, too shameful for them to be seen in this degrading situation,”(Oppenheim 49). If the conflict your facing is with your government, coworker, or even family member it is Ok to make a joke every now and then. The only problem with this, is that it only gets you so far. For the most part, we confuse humour with optimism. You see humour is a state of mind while optimism is hopefulness and confidence that the outcome will be successful. For example Louise Ogawa tells Miss Breed in her letter “P.S. There is no water on Sundays. The electricity is also turned off. Sunday morning everyone eats before 6:00 A.M. Water and electricity turned off between 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. on Sundays. Very very inconvenient. Never realized how valuable water is. The place looked deserted all the time because of the sandiness every[one] stays inside and no one is outside-not even the children so it looks as if no one lives in the barracks,”( Oppenheim 51). She then adds on “If American soldiers can endure hardships so can we!” This shows that no matter what life threw, at her she was ready. This girl was moved from her home and her city, and was put into a camp in the most isolated area they could possibly find and yet she’s optimistic about being able to survive.
