The Tabernacle The literal definition of tabernacle means “a place of dwelling”; however, in the Bible, The Tabernacle was a place where God had chosen to meet his people. During this time period, the Israelites wandered in the desert for forty years under the leadership of Moses’. On the other hand, The Tabernacle did not only represent a place of worship, but it also represented a lesson of unquestionable authority. A year exactly after the Passover took place; when the Israelites were freed from Egyptian slavery, the Tabernacle was first founded in the wilderness. The Tabernacle was a portable tent that could be transported everywhere the Israelites traveled. It would be set up anywhere they stopped, and the Tabernacle would be the center of the camp where all twelve of the Israel tribes would stake their tents accordingly. However, the instructions on how to build the Tabernacle were first given to Moses, who in turn, told the Israelites. For example, when Moses traveled to Mount Sinai for forty days, the Israelites became very impatient because they had not heard anything. In addition to this, the Israelites formed a golden calf that they began to worship in place of God. Prior to being freed from Egyptian slavery, the Israelites had spent ten generations of living within Egypt. Therefore, it was not a surprise that they began to mimic the Egyptians by creating a visual idol of their own. This act of disobedience showed God that the Israelites needed to follow and worship a God that was visually tangible. For this reason, God created the Tabernacle which allowed the people of Israel to sense his presence and to watch their leader physically meet with God in an actual place rather than Moses traveling to Mount
