Different Story People often look at others and judge them based on their appearance. It is something everyone does based on human nature, but nobody knows what that person 's story it. Maybe that lady is dressed in ratty clothes because she works two jobs to support her family. People base these judgments on race, sex, and economic class. I often feel misjudged by people and it is hard because people do not know my real story. On the exterior, I look like a middle class white male and that is what I am, but I am much more than that. The sunflower is its own unique kind and it differs from any other flower or plant. This ties extremely well into this essay. This essay is about my story and how it is not the same as anybody else 's. Each plant serves its own unique purpose just like us as humans. They can grow to be big if they receive the right amount of sunlight, water, and other requirements to help plants grow. I compare that to life after college. We have to have more than just one aspect of college to succeed and grow. We need to get involved to show that we care and have success in the classroom. If future employers see that I not only successful in the classroom, but also got involved, I stand out. That is one way this plant has related to me thus far in my …show more content…
I was never into drugs or in a gang, but that does not mean that I never struggled. Every kid struggles to find their place. Whether it is in faith or sports, everybody has something they like to do to stay out of trouble. For me, sports always kept me busy and it was an escape from the harshness of many parts of the world. I would fail a test or someone in my family would get diagnosed with cancer and I would not know what to do after that, but for a short period of time I would have a worry free escape in the gym. Everyone needs that escape and college is a time to use that activity to its fullest capabilities. It is not a way to procrastinate, only a way to clear your mind so you are able to think freely. Writing this essay has been a very challenging task for me to do. I have thought I had no more to talk about, but I would go clear my head from it and come back with a whole new
Simon Wiesenthal’s book The Sunflower: On the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness spoke to me about the question of forgiveness and repentance. Simon Wiesenthal was a Holocaust prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. He experienced many brutal and uneasy experiences that no human being should experience in their lifetime and bear to live with it. Death, suffering, and despair were common to Simon Wiesenthal that he questioned his own religious faith because he asks why would his God allow the Holocaust happen to his people to be slaughter and not do anything to save them. During Simon Wiesenthal time as a Jewish Holocaust, Simon was invited to a military hospital where a dying Nazi SS officer wanted to have a conversation. The Nazi SS officer told Simon his story of his life and confesses to Simon of his horrific war crimes. Ultimately, the SS officer wanted forgiveness for what he done to Simon’s Jewish people. Simon Wiesenthal could not respond to his request, because he did not know what to do with a war criminal that participate in mass genocide to Simon’s people. Simon Wiesenthal lives throughout his life on asking the same crucial question, “What would I have done?” (Wiesenthal 98). If the readers would be on the exact situation as Simon was
The author of my essay is Simon Balic and he is a historian and culturologist. The title of the work is, Sunflower Symposium (109-111). Balic wrote this essay thirty years after The Sunflower was written. Balic argues that he does not forgive the sufferer, although he does feel some remorse. The author supports and develops the thesis in a chronological order in order to take the reader through exactly what was seen, heard, and thought of during this time. Both Weisenthal and Balic had a liable reason to not forgive the soldier, “There are crimes whose enormity cannot be measured. Rectifying a misdeed is a matter to be settled between the perpetrator and the victim” (Wiesenthal 54). Through this, Balic was trying to speak to his audience of fellow historians.

In a perfect world, everyone WOULD be judged based on the content of their character. But we do not live in a perfect world and humans have always pre-judged others based on physical and cultural differences. These are the first things we notice about a stranger, and first impressions are hard to forget. Racism and prejudice have caused us to make dire mistakes in the past, but we have learned from these mistakes and have bettered our society. However, society today is filled with stereotypes and prejudices about people of certain races. It is evident in all aspects of our lives, including media, culture, and even the legal system.
In other words, I know what I signed up for when I wanted to take on a big load even though at times like the day of the AP test I feel somewhat overwhelmed by it all. The author says sports serve as a distraction in an environment in which academics should reign far superior. From my experiences, like the one last May, I have learned that it is up to me to excel at whatever I am attempting to do. I know not to take on more than I can realistically do, but that does not mean that I do so little that I never push myself like the day of the AP test . I have had several friends in high school who have done great balancing the two activities; one of my closest friends is a Division 1 athlete at Clemson University, the biggest stage for a student athlete. My senior year my other friend Wayne was not so great at being accountable for all of his work load. As football season being to start, Wayne’s grades in advanced courses such as Calculus and Chemistry begin to dip. At this point he essentially had two options: Quit football or sign up for less rigorous courses. Taking no action, Wayne suffered the consequences of his own irresponsibility. His options were very limited when it came to attending a college of his choice despite having several football scholarship offers, but it was all his fault. Thank you Mr. Wiesenthal for letting me be able to read and respond to your book The Sunflower. The Sunflower has showed me how ruthless it was for Jewish people in the Holocaust. In your book Karl, an SS solider, tries to get your forgiveness for the wrong he has done to the Jewish population. For a person to ask for forgiveness means that they have realized that they have done wrong and want to repent for their mistakes. The big question in your book was “What would you do?” I would’ve done exactly what you did I wouldn’t have granted the solider my forgiveness because he didn’t deserve it.
Racism is a major issue that has affected the United States since its discovery. Racism is the hatred by a person of one race pointed at a person of another race. The United States has grown up to improve as a whole but this process is a long way away from completion. Some citizens still believe that African-Americans are inferior to Caucasians and that they should be slaves. In the 1950s, whites and blacks were segregated to a point that they could not go to the same schools or even use the same bathrooms. Chief Justice Earl Warren abolished the segregation of schools in May of 1954. The desegregation of schools has helped people of all races grow up together in a non-hostile environment where they can develop relationships with people of other races. Throughout the play A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry criticizes the racial and discriminatory climate of America in the 1950s and early 60s.
Across the world, regardless of location or ethnicity the outlook an individual has for another’s appearance is influenced by many characteristics. It could be a past occurrence they had with an individual that looks similar or from a stereotype that they have developed about a group of people. Rumors about an individual will typically change a person’s thought for the good or bad depending on the situation. I decided that I wanted to play a sport, I chose volleyball. Most of my friends played the sport so it wasn't hard for me to adjust and make new friends. Becoming a student athlete was a big adjustment for me, I could no longer float through my classes but I need to excel. And that's exactly what I did. For the first time in my high school career I made not only honor roll, but principal’s honor roll. For the first time my mom was proud of my report card, that made me even more proud. From then on I knew I wanted nothing less than what I earned, good grades and a proud family. From my decision to chose to become a student athlete not only make me work harder but, be great at everything I put my mind to. I had motivation to stay successful, to stay eligible. “A Raisin in the Sun” is set at in an area where racism was still occurring. Blacks were no longer separated but they were still facing many racial problems. The black Younger family faced these problems throughout the play. The entire family was affected in their own way. The family has big dreams and hope to make more of their poor lives. Walter, the main character, is forced to deal with most of the issues himself. Ruth, his wife, and Travis, his ten-year-old son, really don’t have say in matters that he sets his mind to. Beneatha, his sister tries to get her word in but is often ignored. Lena (Mama) is Walter’s mother and is very concerned about her family. She tries to keep things held together despite all of the happenings. Mama’s husband had just recently died so times seemed to be even harder. They all live in a small apartment when living space is very confined (Hansberry 1731). They all have dreams in which they are trying to obtain, but other members of the family seem to hold back each other from obtaining them (Decker).
Because of my dark skin, I would be considered less than if I was next to a white person. This is the same for a lot of things, not just race. A lot of people have stereotypes toward older people and disabled people. If I were to see someone older than me, I’d automatically assume they are very incapable, the same with people who have disabilities. I would be completely wrong to assume such things, because these people might be just as, if not more active than me. Someone with a prosthetic leg can be prepping for a marathon and I don’t know that, I just assume that that person can’t even walk. Stereotypes are a strong factor in all things. I have not known one person that has not ever had a stereotype toward another person, myself included. In our society, stereotyping is the norm, we are just starting to recognized how bad it is. It’s hard to not stereotype, because if we meet someone we have to form some kind of opinion. A lot of the opinions we come up with are based off of stereotypes. No matter what, stereotyping is going to happen. We can be completely careful and it would not change a thing. What we can do, is try not to stereotype, or form opinions, too
