We have turned sugar, a biochemically harmful substance into a comfort food, using it to reward as well as cure unnecessary cravings. ’Every bite you take is either fight, disease or feeding it’.
Recently I watched ‘The sugar film” which is about one man's journey to dig deep down and discover the real truth about sugar. Damon Gameau embarks on a unique experiment to document the effects of a high sugar diet on a healthy body, which includes consuming only foods that are commonly known as 'healthy'. Damon highlights some of the issues that plague the sugar industry, and where sugar sits on supermarket shelves. ‘The sugar film’ will forever change the way you think about 'healthy' food. One confounding factor is that sugar is rarely consumed by itself, meaning by the spoonful. It is combined with artificial flavours, fat or starch. Which results in combinations that send the brain's pleasure centres into overdrive which starts to create the addiction. This is one fascinating area of research that I think will only continue to expand over a period of time, but one thing is clear, ‘Sugar, no matter the form whether it be agave, white sugar, brown sugar, coconut sugar is everywhere, and we are consuming unknowingly and too much of it. ” As the sugar film character Damon states, as well as health sites and New Zealand articles as well as worldwide articles we do not realise how much sugar we are intake, basically because the products many tend to go for a said to be healthy and promoted in the right ways which grabs people's attention to buy. People don't look at the sugar content which is a big problem either because they don't think of ingredients included or they basically do not care due the sugary taste which is considered delicious and is addictive. As individuals we need to take more responsibility for things like these as our health is super important and we are effecting is without knowing which cause lots of issues
