Sugar is Sweet, but not as Sweet as Death Under the façade of sweetness, promising entertainment and small pieces of life knowledge are wreaked as Damon Gameau digs deep into the science of sugar using himself as a guinea pig in his documentary That Sugar Film. He finds in his investigation that society are clinging onto outdated ideologies that are leading us into extinction. Tanya reports.
While critics may believe Damon Gameau’s work is nothing short of amateurish, his documentary That Sugar Film presents a powerful and humorous argument. Gameau uses himself as a guinea pig where he consumes 40 teaspoons of sugar for 30 days to expose the hidden sugars in perceived ‘healthy’ foods and the health problems being caused by sugar.

He uses case study on an indigenous community to position us to be aware of the true extent hidden sugars can affect our health. In his case study Gameau is stunned to find out that the community with the population of under 400 people drink 40 thousand litres of soft drink. To investigate further and find the dark influences that has made the indigenous community spiral so low, he interviews John Tungku a man who has made it his mission to change his community to its former glory when the indigenous community had Mai Wiru. Once Mai Wiru is introduced, the colours on the screen change to brighter hues and an upbeat soundtrack plays while Gameau expresses his awe of Amata’s educational health program in the form of a silly dance while informing us of the brilliant benefits that reaped from it, the most important being that the community was empowered to make choices regarding their health. For example, the local market not supplying coke simply because no one in the community want its and Amata being known to have the lowest rate of sugar consumption. However, no one expected this change. The government cuts Amata’s funding and their successful community program, Mai Wiru could not continue running. While there has been attempts to get Amata back on their feet, nothing has worked which leads Amata to their current health crisis
