Contrasts in the Storm
Throughout the month of February Mrs. Henry assigned for her class to read four different short stories written by Kate Chopin. The four stories were; "Ripe Figs," "Story of an Hour," "Désirée's Baby," and "The Storm." The one with the most interesting setting would have to be "The Storm." This story took place in the antebellum time period meaning it was a period before the Civil War. In "The Storm," Kate Chopin, uses contrast to show how society differs in class, gender and marriage.
In this short essay one could view class amongst society. There was noticeable difference upon the wealth that the characters had. The two families were completely opposites throughout the story. Calixta's family had a stronger bond between the father and son. However, as whole the family did not interact very well, because Calixta gave into her passion for another man in the moment that storm was occurring. The two families seen in this essay had opposite appearances. Alcée showed he was wealthier, because he was coming back from town and was riding his horse. On the other hand, there was Bobinôt and his son, Bibi, that went to town by foot.
There was also a difference in gender as the one that was viewed in class. The reader was able to infer that at this time there was gender roles. Gender roles …show more content…

Each character had different opinion and or point of view about marriage. As one reads the essay it obvious that there was two types of relationships taking place. Calixta only had as much space as necessary in a relationship. However, Alcée was having a long distance relationship with his spouse and kids. The relationships were also managed in different ways. Bobinôt appeared to have a great deal of respect for Calixta. Alcée, on the other hand was perfectly fine having a relationship, while being out on his
