Pigs are unique animals due to the fact that there is such a wide variety of pig breeds and body parts. They can be used for several different things including showing, meat, and medicine.

There are so many different breeds of pigs in the world. There are around seventy different breeds of pigs. The most popular breeds are Yorkshire, Duroc, Berkshire, Hampshire, Landrace, Spotted, Chester White, and Poland China. Yorkshire is ¨The most-recorded breed of swine in North America, Yorkshires are white with erect ears. They are found in almost every state, with the highest populations being in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska and Ohio. For example, to keep them healthy, you must feed them all the correct nutrients and vitamins. You also have to make sure you keep the water clean, along with the facility. The way you can judge a pig is its muscle is very important to the meat animal industry. Heavy muscled animals produce more meat and less fat which is very good for show pigs. You can see indications of muscle over the animal’s top, width of stifle, and in the ham region. Look at the top, side and rear views of the heavy and light muscled pigs below. They are also judged by their performance in the way they walk, you want them to walk with their legs going straight in front you don't want them to sway out. Pig and humans biological systems are very similar. “They have a number of anatomic and physiologic similarities to humans in different systems,” Dr. Michael Swindle, retired veterinary researcher and author of “Swine in the Laboratory,” said in an interview. “They are what’s known as a translational research model, so if something works in the pig, then it has a high possibility of working in the human”(Why Pigs Are so Valuable for Medical Research). The pig's organ systems are eighty to ninety percent similar to the corresponding systems in humans, which allows us to use pig's organs. No one really knows why the organs and anatomical systems of pigs are so similar to humans. The system that matches up best may be the cardiovascular system, as a pig’s heart is about the same size and shape as a human heart. Pigs develop atherosclerosis artery plaque buildup – in the same way that humans do, and they react similarly to myocardial infarction, the classic heart attack. The similarities don’t stop there. Pig kidneys are comparable in size and function to human kidneys, lending themselves to renal research. And pigs have been one of the standard plastic surgery models for decades, as their skin wounds heal similarly to humans’ skin. Also ¨Diabetics who needed daily insulin injections relied on pork insulin until the 1980s, when manufacturers started making biosynthetic insulin through recombinant DNA technology.
