In Female Chauvinist Pigs, Ariel Levy attempts to reconcile her personal views of feminism with its portrayal in popular culture. In order to challenge what she sees as a co-opted version of feminism, Levy raises the question of authenticity of “sex-positive feminism” (Levy, 63) on two levels: by “selling out” in terms of the body and in terms of our patriarchal culture. In order to restore a binary relationship between feminism and non-feminism, Levy recasts this sex positive feminism as a new form of (fe)male chauvinism.
To do so, Levy turns to the experiences of several young women whom she interviews. From her interpretations of these experiences, Levy reaches the conclusion that these women’s sexual nature revolves around their need to feel wanted and to gain attention rather than to satisfy their own sexual needs (Levy, 194). But by drawing her experiences from only a small subset of the population, her analysis is ultimately restricted to that of a simulacral woman: specifically, one constructed from the characters that actively participate in raunch culture.
While I do agree with Levy’s analysis about raunch culture and about how much our culture still reveres the masculine over the feminine (Levy, 96), I feel that her arguments are not necessarily representative of how any individual woman would interact or respond to raunch culture. Levy also underestimates our ability to use popular culture and repurpose it to find our own happiness. By treating raunch culture as a mass cultural phenomenon (rather than a popular cultural one), Levy neglects to consider raunch culture itself as a potential site of resistance against society’s patriarchal system of values. The conversion of feminism into a binary relationship simplifies the bigger picture of the feminist debate, and thus makes it easier to read. This in turn reaches an audience that is larger than just the highly educated feminists; something that feminists have argued is needed to make the movement stronger. However, on another level, who can interpret what is real feminism and what steps are forward? At what point are we ‘genuinely’ enjoying our sexuality as women and at what point are we simply seeking attention from men? At what point are we being manipulated by our consumer culture? This is ultimately something that every woman must decide for herself.
Feminism is a word that is stock-full of implications, and has many misconceptions. Full Frontal Feminism by Jessica Valenti attempts to give a broad overview of what feminism is, and how you should feel about it (hint: it’s positively). The book is directed primarily towards the younger generation, and talks about a variety of issues relevant to the feminist movement today and in history. The weaknesses of the book include the casual writing, the assumptions Valenti makes, and the contradictory statements that are consistently made. The strengths include providing an entertaining, broad overview of feminism, and discussing ways to contribute to gender equality. Overall, the book is more likely to be a positive experience for high-schoolers that identify as women then college-aged individuals looking for a critical analysis of issues society faces in regards to gender inequality.

This is clearly evident in Betty Warren’s condemnation of Professor Katherine Watson’s progressive, feminist ideals. Warren writes, “It is our duty- nay, obligation to reclaim our place in the home . . . Her [Watson] subversive and political teachings encourage our Wellesley girls to reject the roles they were born to fill” (01:08:01-01:08:28). By writing this, she clearly indicates that Watson’s denial of a traditional lifestyle is deplorable. Warren also implies that Watson is not a respectable woman, being as she lives a lifestyle that is not in accordance with what a woman is meant to do. The entire publication is a direct attack on Watson’s gender identity, being that it suggests that she is not feminine enough. Warren hopes that with this publication, Watson will quiet her voice. This is her way of maintaining the patriarchal elements of their society.

Language can produce a false imagination and represents women and men unequally, as if members of one sex were somehow less wholly human, less complex, and has fewer rights than members of the other sex. Sexist language also characterizes serotypes of women and men, sometimes to the disadvantage of both, but more often to the disadvantage of women. (Wareing & Thomas, 2012). As a result, it is necessary that individuals have the right to define, and to redefine as their lives unfold, their own gender identities, without regard to genitalia, assigned birth sex, or initial gender role. Language about women is not a nonaligned or an insignificant issue but profoundly a political one.
Now if asked “how” men express their feelings, I can say they do mostly by taking action. For example, it is there as a stereotype that all men are sexually driven, but it is certainly not something that we always catch every single one of them saying directly. Well then how do they express it? They express it through their actions, what they do, what they watch and sometimes where they even go. A typical woman who would catch a partner doing things like this would probably go insane learning that the partner is doing those things. This is because women were brought up in a way to be organized, clean and sexually conservative. But is it the women that cause them to appreciate these things? [That would be considered socially wrong in the women culture!] Then why do some women do these things? Why do they participate in raunch culture? There are many ways women can succeed, but with these types of women, they choose to succeed by going astray the norm and flowing in the direction of the opposite sex by becoming Female Chauvinist Pigs, which is the new brand of an “empowered woman” something outside the norm of woman. In her article “Female Chauvinist Pigs,” these women would say things like, “Why throw your boyfriend’s Playboy in a freedom trash can when you could be partying at the Mansion? In a society where equality is constantly fought over, there are bound to be disputes. Feminism, the movement to create empowerment and equal rights for women, has been criticized by those who argue who, what, and how feminism should be fought with. Many conservative feminists believe that succumbing to men’s pleasure is never the answer, whereas “lipstick” feminists believe that they should be able to use all of their essence in order to establish equality. However, society needs both women and men equally. Feminism shouldn’t focus on how women reach that equality, but rather to reach that point of equality in the first place; with anything they got.
Pigs are fascinating creatures, but many people only think of them as food. In reality pigs are so much more than ‘just food’ although the average American eats consumes 51 pounds of pork each year, and 116,558,900 pigs are killed for food. In the average American lifetime, humans eat 33 pigs. The usual age they kill pigs are five to six months old. This means most pigs don’t experience 95% of their lives. Pigs are highly intelligent, they are great household pets, and contrary to a popular belief pigs are very clean. Pigs are very social and love being around other creatures.

Commack (2014) draws comparisons between radical, conservative, and liberal feminisms, clearly explaining the differences in thought that allow for the distinctiveness of each approach (p.38-39). Although radical and conservative feminisms share an assumption of essentialist and biological differences between men and women, radical feminists focus and value almost entirely on women and their traits, while conservative feminists tend to value perceived ‘male’ traits (Commack, 2014, p.38). Evans (1995) disagrees slightly with Commack’s argument though, arguing that early radical feminist theory was more egalitarian and saw both sexes as “marred by society: by patriarchy and by capitalism,” and was less likely to blame men for the oppression of women (p.64). Commack (2014) states that radical feminism emerged in response to a liberal feminist approach and some of the criticisms that had emerged regarding it (p. 37). While a liberal feminist approach may call for administrative reform within society, a radical feminist framework calls for “transformation or major structural change” which may be necessary when the amount of inequality within society is considered

Or so we thought, many of the gender expectations that were engraved into our early society still remain intact today. Women for many people still mean an immaterial, negligible, and frivolous part of our society. To state again, the misconception of the word feminism has misinformed a lot of people about the different types of feminism in the world. Feminism has been defined differently by many, but only one perspective has been the voice of the movement. Liberal feminism, Black feminism, Individualist feminism, Socialist and Marxist feminisms, Post structural feminism, Postmodern feminism these are all different types of feminism listed on the article Feminism, New World Encyclopedia. They all have different ideologies and apply to different people, but the Media oversaturated the ideology of Radical feminism. The New World Encyclopedia defines radical feminism as identifies “the capitalist sexist hierarchy as the defining feature of women’s oppression.” Most believe that capitalism needs to be uprooted and reconstructed for women to ever be free. Radical feminism receives the most attention because of the language that they use. Radical feminism have been classified to use assertive, vulgar, aggressive, loud styles of persuasion. They are more often screaming at their opponent rather than exchanging viewpoints. Certain feminist speak this way because this is how they can grab the attention needed from the press.
