Significance of the Great Pyramid of Giza
The Great Pyramid of Giza greatly puzzles historians who try to uncover its true significance. Many unusual features make the Great Pyramid’s significance very unique yet baffling. Several have tried to produce theories to explain the purpose and role of this Ancient Wonder of the World.
The Great Pyramid of Giza was built by Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops) to protect his belongings for eternity. Almost all of the pyramids in Egypt serve as tombs for the pharaohs who built them. However, this pyramid could be an exception. It was discovered with a battered and damaged coffin without a lid or paintings. This box’s contents didn’t include a mummy either.
The absence of the coffin wasn’t the only peculiar feature of the Great Pyramid of Giza. This landmark is also missing a capstone, or apex. This is very significant in Egyptian culture as it is supposed to help direct the pharaoh to afterlife. The Great Pyramid is the only pyramid in Egypt to have a Grand Gallery. It states on traveltips.todayusa.com that the Grand Gallery is “…a steeply slanted passage less than 7 ft. wide but more than 153 ft. long and nearly 29 ft. high. The walls were lined with massive granite blocks from the Aswan quarry.” It is also the only pyramid with an ascending set of passages. These unique features lead people to believe that the pyramid wasn’t constructed to serve as a tomb, and that they may have been significant is a different way.
Many historians have made theories about the significance of the Great Pyramid of Giza. It states on www.gizapyramid.com, “M. Fialin de Persigngy in 1845 expressed the opinion that the purpose of the pyramids were to act as barriers against the sandy irruptions of the dessert ...

The Great Pyramid’s ties to the Tower of Babel also help support the fact that the Great Pyramid was an astrological observatory. The Tower of Babel is supposed to have been built in order to see the sky. Since the Great Pyramid is supposed to be an imitation of the Tower of Babel, it can be thought to be built for a similar purpose.
The Great Pyramid of Giza baffles those who try to decipher its significance. It stands out from all the other pyramids in Egypt. Many have tried to produce theories to attempt to uncover this landmark’s significance, and many make valid arguments. However, the real answer to this mystery is unknown to this day.
