There are several events and symbols I used while creating this stamp. One of the main symbols I incorporated into this stamp is the swastika, symbolizing the Nazi Germany Party. Behind the symbol of the Nazi Party is the bonfire, both an important symbol and event. The bonfire takes place on Hitler’s birthday in 1940. All kinds of literature and books are looted from the Jews and thrown into the bonfire to burn. Liesel then reaches into the fire and grabs a book called “The Shoulder Shrug”, which somehow remains unburnt. This is Liesel's second stolen book, but is the first book which can get her into a lot of trouble. Not long after the “theft”, Liesel does get caught; by Ilsa Hermann. Liesel steals this book from the book burning because of her deep animosity for the Fuhrer, because of what he has compassed to her family. The fifth book is Mein Kampf. Liesel receives this book from Hans because it will disguise her from being against the Nazis. The sixth book is The Whistler. The Whistler symbolizes Liesel’s relationship with Rudy, and the faith they have between them.
The posters appeal to logos is deeply intertwined with an appeal to pathos due to the poignant nature of the subject matter. Spielberg’s decision to not use faces in the poster emphasizes the gravity of the Holocaust. This coupled with his use of color as well as his omission of color make a poignant statement: The black and white portions of the poster represent the masses of people who will remain unknown as they are merely a name on a list; whereas the red sleeve on the child is like a blatant mark signifying importance of one person who might have otherwise been lost in the sea of people. By marking and highlighting the value of one person, Spielberg comments on the immense bloodshed of the Holocaust as well as emphasizes the value of human life. The firm grip that the adult’s hand has on the child’s hand symbolizes hope despite the strife and carnage that the Holocaust produced. It represents the strong will that many Jewish people had who, even in the face of the crisis, still looked to the future with hope.
When I initially looked at the title I immediately wondered if this story was being told from the Nazi perspective or a person who had interaction with Nazi. After looking at the front page and reading the title I thought the book was going to be about a a person who was hiding his identity. The front page which contained a black silhouette of person who looks like a kids with the Nazi sign on his shoulder. The shadow of the black silhouette had a star of David on the shoulder. Life is not something simple as we often prefer. There are many different approaches and in most instances we will not find the desired fulfillment in any of them. In the short story “Parkers Back” written by Flannery O’Connor we have a multi-faceted view into the life of the primary character O.E. Parker. In addition we see into the life of Sarah Ruth, Parker’s wife and possibly into the life of author Flannery O’Connor, who died shortly after completing this short story. The characters in this story deal with Tattoos from totally different perspectives and get completely different results. Tattoos are the focal point of the story and prominent on many occasions. Without purpose in life people often make bad decisions which impact the rest of their lives and those they interact with. How often do we pretend to be something or somebody we are not, and have to live with the unpleasant results?
After Liesel learns how to read and write, she receives the task of , “completing a letter for homework” (Zusak 95). Eventually she arrives at the conclusion to write to her biological mother. Liesel then continues to write more letters, but lacks the money to purchase stamps in order to send them. On her birthday, she would give “a present from herself. She would gather all the accrued letters to her mother, stuff them into one envelope, and use just a tiny portion of the washing and ironing money to mail it” (Zusak 98). Consequently, Liesel’s foster mother, Rosa soon discovers the gap in her laundry payments. When enraged, Rosa makes Liesel break just by asking her about the missing money. It was Liesel’s guilt that made her feel the need to confess so easily to the crime.
This is where Liesel steals a book from a massive community celebration, where books, and other things, were burned as a form of censorship that went against the Party’s beliefs, which could be anything from cultural, religious or political opposition (Book Burning). “Any materials from such time --newspapers, posters, books, flags-- and any found propaganda of our enemies should be brought forward.” (Page 102) Many great works of Jewish authors and even American authors were burned. The point of the book burnings was to erase any form of non-German knowledge and to only allow ideas that supported the Nazi Party. In the book, Liesel steals a book from the fire, which turns out to be a Jewish book. The was caught for stealing by the mayor 's wife, but was easily forgiven and was even allowed to read books in her private library. In the movie Donnie Darko directed by Richard Kelly. The main protagonist Donald Darko, also known as Donnie. Is sent on a mental journey through space and time, all while trying to figure out exactly what happens at the end of the countdown. After watching this film for the first time, it left me with many unanswered questions. I felt as though this movie was one that forced you to use your own interpretation, and imagination. ...internationally and has often been called ‘Harry Potter and the Holocaust’, a young girl’s difficult yet determined journey towards maturity. However, there are some who argue that a book so sad and sentimental is hardly a suitable read for teenagers. In Zusak’s own country, the book was published for a more mature audience and I think it does require a grown-up head to interpret the complicated emotions portrayed in here. Still, reading it can be a life-changing experience for this book comes with a message of hope. Liesel is the embodiment of that hope, a personification of love and generosity that even Death comes to love and respect. Read The Book Thief for it’s a lesson for life and food for thought for our generation. Read it for it shows one how to hope, and above all, read it for Death, the narrator with a heart, who confesses that he is haunted by humans.
This is shown when she accepts Max, a Jew, as her friend, even though Nazi Germany tells her otherwise. She thinks of him as a human being and not vermin the Nazi's are making them out to be. Additionally, Liesel is loving because she risked her well-being to see Max for a couple of minutes. This is shown when Death says, "She raced through the files of face after face, trying to match them to the Jew who wrote The Standover Man and The Word Shaker"(509). Liesel knew the repercussions, but didn't care because she loves Max. Her love is also shown when she wrote, ""...and I know a small piece of the summer of 1942 belonged to only one man. In Hatchet, the main character’s use of both a rifle and a hatchet symbolize his encounter of man versus nature. While Brian is in the wilderness, he forms a unique bond with the animals and plants around him. He realizes that he goes through the same challenges and struggles many of the animals around him that he never notices will he was at home in the cities. Such as finding water, safe food to eat, shelter, and avoiding the top predators on the food chain. He also finds the beauty in most things that he would fear or be disgusted at home. In the wilderness he is free from all of his city worries and family issues, but full of natures overwhelming fight to survive.

Finally, Hans’ accordion symbolises comfort in The Book Thief. When Hans leaves to go fight in the war, he leaves his accordion at home with Rosa and Liesel. This is the moment that Liesel know that Rosa truly does love Hans, although she might not show it. “Liesel watched. She knew that for the next few days, Mama would be walking around with the imprint of an accordion on her body” (429). Rosa, Liesel’s “Mama”, keeps the accordion close to her heart because it reminds her of her husband, Hans, whom she misses so much. In The Book Thief, symbolism attracts attention to certain thematic ideas and the novel itself.
In Zora Neale Hurston’s novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, she utilizes an array of symbolism such as color, the store, and her husbands to solidify the overall theme of independence and individuality. Their Eyes Were Watching God is considered by many a classic American Feminist piece that emphasizes how life was for African Americans post slave era in the early 1900s.
