The Great Depression happened in the 1930s, this was a period that millions of Americans were unemployment, the economy went down quickly, banks corrupted, buildings and houses were destroyed, all farms were empty or also called the “Bowl Dust”. There were a few opportunities to have a job. Eugenia Collier, who is an author that wrote the short story “Marigolds” which related during the Great Depression time. The summary of this story is Lizabeth and her family. They lived in the poor town with inconvenient life. Lizabeth and her brother, Joey, and other kids had a bad childhood. They destroyed Miss Lottie’s garden with beautiful marigolds. Lizabeth also heard a conversation between her parent, so she knew how hard is life and got experience from that. …show more content…

The cause that made her parents were in an argument is her dad could not get jobs. Her mom had to go out and made money. The men at that time couldn’t accept for the women to go to work. The mission of the men was only work and bring money to provide for their family. They separated the gender rule which women didn’t get respect, men were more important and the society didn’t equal. Her dad was really mad and sad because he could not do anything. He cried because he thought he was an useless. That pain was so humiliated for the men. This was motivated Lizabeth to destroy Miss Lottie’s garden. Mad, upset, disappointed were the factors that contributed to Lizabeth’s action because she felt like the world is so bad, everything is bad. But the only thing that symbolized most beautiful was the marigolds in the garden of Miss Lottie. She was jealousy with Miss Lottie. She didn’t want others to happiness. So she decided to destroy all the marigolds. After destroying the garden of marigolds, she felt the pain, destruction by making eye contact with Miss Lottie. Miss Lottie didn’t hit or scold at
