Virginia Woolf once said, “You cannot find peace by avoiding life.” Life will inevitably give one challenges, obstacles, and tests. Without these challenges in life, one can never feel great about themselves on how to overcome problems. In addition, peace can not be found if one avoids life by not accepting where one comes from, what one’s religion is, to be happy within their heart, or how to overcome tough situations. The accuracy tends to be correct as one is supposed suppose to go through all the hardships of life in order to find peace within themselves. Haruki went on with his life being controlled by the fear of the ocean and waves. Decades went on and Haruki never found a wife, because he thought that he would wake up his spouse from nightmares, due to the recurring dreams of his best friend dying due to a wave. In addition, he did not want to wed anyone because he had the constant mentality that he’d lose his wife, so never found love because of his fear of potentially losing it. Also, never got a job because due to the fear again, always thought he would lose it and not go far, or have a successful career. Therefore, Haruki experienced a big part of his life that he wasted away of years in poverty, depression, and a mentality controlled by fear. Never wanting to face life and finding peace, he did not have a very successful or peaceful life until the day came that he went to a beach and saw the ocean and accepted it, and finally, after all the years, finally faced his fear. The message he conveyed was to face your fears before the fear controls you forever. In other words, saying that one must face and go through life to find peace, rather than avoiding life and not receiving
