The probationary period is a more accurate evaluation of an employee’s abilities, desire, and work ethic in the actual workplace setting. Although, preemployment tests and assessments are useful indicators as to how an employee will perform there is nothing better than on the job evaluation. My probationary period for the new hire would last approximately 6 months and will enable both my supervisor and I the opportunity to examine the new employees’ behavior and decide whether or not this individual has performed to the organization’s standards. During this probationary period certain rights and benefits provided to permanent employees will not be provided to the new hire and in addition I will perform a performance evaluation once every two months to update the new employee on his/her current performance and how it is measuring up to the organization’s standards. These evaluations/performance appraisals will serve as a guide and learning tool for both the employer and the new employee. The purpose of this appraisal is to inform and document what is going good and what can be improved upon in accordance with the organization’s goals and needs. This gives the employee a chance to correct or improve upon any behavior that is not satisfactory before it is too late and it also gives the employer insight as to how the employee is performing. In addition it reduces the occurrence of shirking occurring. Shirking is a term used to refer to members within an organization potentially not performing to the organization’s acceptable (baseline) standards.
