Anne had to suffer many hardships during her two years in hiding. While in hiding, the living conditions were harsh, relationships formed within the Annex, and having enough food was a struggle. As the Nazis began invading Germany, the Franks made their way to the Netherlands to begin their life in hiding. While in hiding, the living conditions were very horrific.The Franks as well as the Van Danns moved to a Secret Annex within Mr. Frank’s business. The Secret Annex was an attic hidden by a moveable bookcase. Within the Secret Annex was all their necessities, but it was a very small space. Anne could not relate to any one in her family, but her dad. She struggled to relate to her mother and sister, so she began to write her diary. Her sister,Margot, was said to be “perfect”, and everyone wanted Anne to be more like her. As their time in hiding became longer and longer, more relationships formed. Anne and Peter became closer, and eventually were in a relationship. Anne and Peter had a lot to relate to. They talked about their hopes and dreams as well as their family difficulties. This create a strong bond between both Anne and Peter. One of the biggest struggles within the Annex was food. Often, there was little amounts of food, so they went hungry. The food had to be delivered by Miep. The food was always delivered in the form of ration books, so it was unfortunately almost always the same. As their time in hiding became longer, the amount of food lessened. Mr. Van Daan was secretly stealing extra food, but was eventually caught. This created a fierce argument between Mrs. Frank and Mr. Van Daan. Anne and her family were eventually caught, by the Nazis, and sent to a concentration camp. Unfortunately, Mr. Frank was the only one to survive. Although Anne and her family’s life in hiding was very tragic, Anne will always be remembered for her
