The Safety and Marketability of Genetically Modified Corn
Since Kraft Foods recently had to recall taco shells made from corn that was approved for human consumption, Arnold Weigand didn't know whether or not he should avoid growing any genetically modified corn. A study was conducted to examine whether or not growing genetically modified corn was a sound economical decision for Arnold Weigand. The problems with gentically modified corn, the dangerous chemicals in genetically modified corn, and the testing that has been done on genetically modified corn was reviewed. We also determined whether the corn would be successful in the market. To determine whether or not the corn would be successful in the market, we reviewed the companies that were or were not willing to buy the crop, and if the foreign markets were willing to purchase it. Finally, we reviewed our material and decided if Arnold Weigand should avoid growing genetically modified corn. We reached our decision regarding the safety of the crop and the future success in the market.

Is genetically modified corn safe? In 1999 a problem arose with genetically modified crops when a greater number of laboratory rats suffered from abnormalities in their small intestines after ten days of feeding on genetically modified potato diets, relative to those feeding on non-genetically modified potato diets. In an extraordinary unusual step within the scientific field, the same journal that published the paper simultaneously published the rebuttal. The rebuttal made it clear that the potato diet was in appropriate for rats, that similar intestinal abnormalities are well known in rats fed similar diets, and that the sample size, which consisted of six rats, was too small to draw any conclusions. The report was seized upon by anti-genetically modified advocates to support their contention that proper regulatory oversight is either lacking or inadequate. Another problem is that a widely-used genetically modified corn leaves traces of a toxin in the soil that remain deadly for pests for a long period and may have untold effects on other insects. This study is based upon experiments showing that transgenic corn has a devastating effect on North American monarch butterflies. This effect on the monarch butterfly has created a negative public concern, which is associated with press coverage of technological controversy. Researchers at New York University and the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Investigation examined a type of maize, called Bt corn, that has been modified to release toxins in the foliage to kill caterpillars and other pests.

Of course, GMOs have only been around for about two decades and extensive long-term studies are still required. On the other hand, pro-GMO people have pointed out that resistant and durable GM crops produce higher yields and create abundance. With a higher food supply, there is more accessibility and therefore, more nutrition to go around. If you read the paper or watch the news, you’re undoubtedly aware of the debate raging over genetically modified food. Is it bad or is it good? Between the feuding sides, you might find yourself a little lost and wondering which side is right. Answers to seemingly simple questions have been blurred or exaggerated by both sides. On one side genetically modified food is more sustainable, safe, cheaper, easier to grow and has the potential of creating disease-fighting foods. Although this is positive and good intentioned, there may be unintended consequences that we have been quick to overlook. Those opposing genetically modified food clam that it is dangerous, harms the environment, increases health risks, and causes infertility and weight gain. Even things like the declining bee population may have closer ties to modified food than previously thought. We must look to science for answers. By studying genetically modified organisms (GMOs) we can guide our decision about whether we want to be consuming them.
In this paper I will be focusing my attention on foods modified to produce a certain insecticidal protein known as Bt. I have to do this mostly for brevity. To discuss in detail all of the types GMOs in production or slated for production could easily fill a paper ten times as long as this. Also, Bt crops are already in wide production, with over three million acres planted worldwide, and are already sold in many processed foods (Altieri, 2000). This makes the task of dispelling myths about them all the more prudent. The alleged dangers of Bt crops can be roughly divided into two groups: the risks that growing them pose to the environment, and the risks that eating them pose to people.
The Controversy Over Genetically Modified Foods The genetic engineering of foods has, in one sense, been in existence for hundreds of years. The first time Gregor Mendel bred different varieties of pea plants to observe the various traits present in their offspring, the concept was born. Today, genetic engineering has developed into one of the most complex and advanced fields of scientific thinking, all the while provoking many questions and acquiring many opponents along the way. While there are compelling arguments presented for each side of the issue, the simple fact is that genetically modified (GM) foods are a reality, especially in the United States, as they are already present in many products that are consumed on a daily basis.

This quote from the article “Statement by the AAAS Board of Directors On Labeling of Genetically Modified Foods” expresses that fact that humans have used the favorable genes of plants since the days of Gregor Mendel, the father of genetics. When plants exhibited a desirable trait, they were bred together so that more of the offspring would have that trait. Genetic Modification is manipulating the genome of the plant, but humans have been doing that for years. Modifying the genes is a more precise way to do this. Genetic Modification improves food and is safe.
Although it may seems like we may have some important questions answered with this new method, there has been much controversy circling these genetically engineered foods. In the United States and many other countries around the world, the actually safety of these foods have been questioned. There has also been much concern involving the supposed benefits for farmers, environmental risks, and labeling of these genetically engineered crops in our food.

If I was the decision maker, first of all I would not sell the genetically modified corn as my company is known for selling organic produce. If the corn is genetically modified and safe for human consumption, I would sell it by not giving it an organic label so customers would be clear that it isn’t an organic product.

Genetically modified food’s, or GMOs, goal is to feed the world's malnourished and undernourished population. Exploring the positive side to GMOs paints a wondrous picture for our planet’s future, although careful steps must be taken to ensure that destruction of our ecosystems do not occur. When GMOs were first introduced into the consumer market they claimed that they would help eliminate the world’s food crisis by providing plants that produced more and were resistant to elemental impacts like droughts and bacterial contaminants, however, production isn’t the only cause for the world’s food crisis. Which is a cause for concern because the population on the earth is growing and our land and ways of agriculture will not be enough to feed everyone sufficiently. No simple solutions can be found or applied when there are so many lives involved. Those who are hungry and those who are over fed, alike, have to consider the consequences of Genetically Modified Organisms. Food should not be treated like a commodity it is a human necessity on the most basic of levels. When egos, hidden agendas, and personal gains are folded into people's food sources no one wins. As in many things of life, there is no true right way or wrong way to handle either of the arguments and so many factors are involved that a ‘simple’ solution is simply not an option.
