The short story “The Royal Flush” is written by Lori Pollock and the year of publication was 2013. This short story deals with themes such as compassion for other people, prejudice to-wards other cultures, and generosity. Through our analytical essay we will write why these themes are included in the short story but we will also write about the point of view, the char-acters and the setting there is described in the short story. The short story is told in a third person narrative. We follow the protagonist both “from the inside” and “form the outside”. You get to know that she has a father there is a farmer, but her mother is no longer alive. She see herself as a flexitarian in the way she sometimes eats meat, but only if the animals were treat-ed in a courtly manner. Lindsey goes to Dhaka the capital of Bangladesh to work on a sustain-ability project, which she first thought was a sustainable project with focus on water conser-vation, but she ends up working with setting up sustainable toilets. In Bangladesh she meets J.P (we don’t know his real name), which she previously worked together with, and in Bangla-desh he appears to be her superior. She is really involved in making the environment better, by focusing on sustainability. It is also expressed in the way she cares about animals right to a courtly life. It is not clear whether or not she is volunteering, however it seems like she is pas-sionate about her job and wants to make a difference. The overall picture of Lindsey is that she is a helpful person with a strong sense of justice and a desire to help others. Lindsey is one of many Europeans and Americans for instance who give people like in Bangladesh some better living facilities. As much as it gives people some better living facilities there is also a reason behind, because sustainability is a huge topic all over the world these days. The developing countries are far behind, when it comes to sustainability and taking care of the environment, so Lindsey wants to make a dif-ference, because her passion is to change the world into an environmentally friendly place.
