Someone once asked me how I felt about prejudice. “In contrast to what?”, or should I say, “shocking in all its forms.” Initially my response was puzzling. Let me explain. If you were to ask me how I felt about prejudice in the United States I would have to say, “Here, I am very aware of my skin color.” It is no secret that the US has had a long historical battle with racism. I am able to be educated at the collegiate level, due wholly, or in part, to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960’s. It is the reason I am allowed to vote in this country. The reason I can walk in any public arena and claim what is equally, or rightfully mine, subjected to law. It does not mean there is always equal application based on the right(s). I can recall in grade school, a conversation my fourth grade teacher and her assistant were having on the playground, during recess, in regards to the class’ overall progress. The assistant made mention of the fine progress a particular African American student was making and how surprised she was at a Caucasian student’s poor progress. The teacher’s response was surprise as well. She thought the Caucasian child should be excelling because the child was from “proper breeding”, as she so plainly stated. “Proper Breeding”, because the child is Caucasian the child should be excelling! This would not be the last time I would encounter this mentality. In my formative years, it was disturbing, the words and the expectation. It made me plainly aware of my skin color. Unfortunately, preparing for college was not any different. My high school counselor was hosting an information session on the college application process. My then best friend, a Caucasian female, posed a question to the counselor about ... ... middle of paper ... ...gotiation because the rugs this vendor offered were exquisite. I went back to the vendor to show the rug to my male friend. I reached down to touch the rug and the vendor slapped my hand. He slapped me hard. This abrupt behavior was not only shocking but incited my male counterpart to anger. It incited me to tears. The vendor was shouting , “a woman does not have the right to touch such things.” The civil authorities got involved. There was mass confusion, a lot of screaming, some insults being exchanged in foreign languages, by the locals and the visitors alike, on my part, mostly fear. Mostly Shock. Prejudice comes in many forms. It can be based on race, gender, or nationality to name a few. I think the kind of prejudice you experience is relative to the situation and can be in sharp contrast to one another. I am always in shock when I experience it.

Prejudice is an issue that cannot be easily avoided in today's society. It has and always will have a huge impact on the discrimination that some people face based on religion, appearance, background, mental/physical disabilities and etc.
Eduardo Bonilla-Silva and Sue both demonstrate from their research that Whites do not comprehend the impact of their unconscious biases. These biases towards students of colour in a white-based post-secondary school environment can result in stress and weak interracial relationships. This is an issue since the significance of these everyday actions is not fully recognized and acknowledged. I will elaborate on a variety of examples, specifically the influence of the peers, and faculty.
Some people say prejudice is part of human nature. Others think we learn it from our elders. Either one could be true, as there are various controversial beliefs about why prejudice exists in the world. One interesting theory is that prejudice is an emotional reaction that is triggered in our brain whenever we encounter unknown people, who have different physical characteristics, different personalities, and/or different beliefs. In fact, these unfamiliar people scare us, and we start treating them differently to reassure ourselves that they cannot possibly matter to us. Across the nation, millions of Americans of all races turn on the television or open a newspaper and are bombarded with images of well dressed, articulate, attractive black people advertising different products and representing respected companies. The population of black professionals in all arenas of work has risen to the point where seeing a black physician, attorney, or a college professor are becoming more a common sight. More and more black people are holding positions of respect and authority throughout America today, such as Barack Obama, Colin Powell, Condelezza Rice and many other prominent black executives. As a result of their apparent success, these black people are seen as role models for many Americans, despite their race. However, these groups of black people are exceptions to the rule and consist of only a tiny fraction of all black Americans. These black people in turn actually help to reinforce the inequality of black Americans by allowing Americans of other races to focus on their success. A common thought is, "They made it, why can't you do the same?" The direct and truthful answer to that question is Racism.
As an African American male, I experienced inequality, and judgment from individuals that have no idea what kind of person I truly am. Racism in this day and age is still as big of a problem as it was in the past, and as long as hate groups are still around to promote violence, society is never going to grow to love one another.
Prejudice is the attitude of conveying negative stereotypes to a particular group, usually known as the out-groups. Usually the stereotypes are generalizations based on superficial opinions, so they have an invalid connotation behind it. Stereotypes in some cases evoke prejudice mindsets, leading to discriminate a certain ethnic group, age group, religion, seuxal orienntation, or body size. Stereotypes are usually socially learned from one’s environment and latched onto the mind of a young child. This could possibly later influence their opinion about something they are not fully educated on. One cannot control what they are taught, but one can control what they do with that information. Allport defined prejudice as an antipathy that is founded on an inflexible and faulty generalization. He further stated that it can be expressed or felt, directed towards an individual or a group. An integral part of the acknowledgment of prejudice lies in properly identifying the appropriate category under which antagonism is targeted. Many people are unaware how constant racism has been throughout the years. It is important to understand the problems of racism because it is relevant to society. Racism in America is very real and Americans need to know it.
Imagine waking up tomorrow and reading in the local paper that the government was giving tax breaks to minorities in order to prevent discrimination. Congress insists that the deductions will “help level the playing field” in American society, claiming that diversity is necessary in creating an ideal nation, but is this attempt to prevent disparities and racism not an act of inequality in itself? By putting this policy into place, the government is giving advantages to minorities without showing the same generosity to Caucasians of the same economic backgrounds. Protests would be taking place around the country as citizens argue that the plan violates their Constitutional right to equality. Yet this is exactly the type of scenario seen in universities across the country. Colleges use race as a large factor in admissions in order to create “optimal diversity” among the students. However, this attempt at variety often comes at the expense of white and Asian students. For these reasons, affirmative action policies in college admissions should be eliminated in the United States.
Racism and prejudice has been present in almost every civilization and society throughout history. Even though the world has progressed greatly in the last couple of decades, both socially and technologically, racism, hatred and prejudice still exists today, deeply embedded in old-fashioned, narrow-minded traditions and values.
Prejudice and hate have always been prominent issues in society. Their roots extend from European concentration camps to American issues of civil rights (Kleg, 1993, p. 18). Not only were feelings of prejudice seen within ethnicities, but also within gender and socioeconomic statuses. Eventually each case has diminished through appropriate regulations and education. It is no surprise that in the twenty-first century, prejudice and hate is still prevalent in society, and more importantly, in the classroom. Yet, just as in years passed, prejudice in the classroom can be reduced through regulations, education, and by other means. Thus, prejudice can be reduced or prevented, if the proper precautions are emplaced.
Prejudice can be caused because of various reasons. Religion, ethnic race and social status are examples of causes of prejudice. Sometimes prejudice is caused by how we are raised. Many times parents pass on prejudice beliefs to their children. A lot people raised in the southern part of the country are prejudice against blacks. In the early to mid 1960’s, prejudice was alive and well in the south. Blacks had their own bathrooms and were forced to ride in the back of city busses. It’s hard to believe that was doing on only 40 years ago. A lot of Middle Eastern countries are very prejudice against women.
Everyone is prejudice in some way or another. From a young age individuals observe, or are taught discrimination against others. Whether it is because of religion, sexuality, race, gender, personality, or just someone’s way of life, everyone is biased. In many ways, who we are today, is influenced by our race, ethnicity, and culture, and overall our individual identities. Every experience, positive or negative, has an impact on how we react to something in the future. Decisions others make, can impact the way we interact with others, our personal beliefs, and all together our life experiences. Along our path of life, we meet people with different goals and circumstances they’ve encountered which make them who they are and why they do certain things a certain way. But our experiences
