George Washington had many roles throughout his life in which he expressed his character and leadership. He was able to provide for his family at a young age. He also served in the military during the French and Indian War, and believed himself to be an innovative farmer. After, he was the Commander of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. During his Presidency, Washington was able to bring the new country together and gain foreign exchanges. When he returned home, he died with his family and friends by his side. He would switch from tobacco and wheat to keep the soil healthy. Washington also liked to try different types of fertilizers, crop rotation, tools, crops, and livestock breeding to see if any would improve the operation of his farm. In the 1760’s, Washington expanded his plantation to include commercial fishing and a flour mill. In these ways, he helped to create a more profitable property. He exported to foreign ports and soon created a distillery. Even while Washington was in office as the first President, he was improving his plantation. He created the 16-sided barn to make a more efficient way to thresh wheat and oversaw the construction for it, while in Philadelphia at the President’s House. Two short years later, Washington was overseeing field activities when it began to rain. He made it home, but did not change out of his wet clothes for dinner. The next day, he lay in discomfort and was seen by three or more doctors. His condition worsened over the next two days, and George Washington died late at night on December 14th, 1799. His wife, family friends, and beloved servants were there with him at the time he died. Washington was not buried for three days after his death according to his wishes, so three days later a solemn funeral was held for George Washington.
