In Greek mythology, there exist heroes endowed with courage and supernatural powers. Those heroes are part of the myths and stories that ancient Greeks believed and lived their lives around. These myths often told the stories of great heroes and Greek gods. A great story from the Greek mythology often tell the myth of Perseus. A great Greek hero who bent his journey on retrieving the head of Medusa and bringing it back to the king and to have his revenge for persecuting his mother, Danae. An important theme of the myth changed in the recent movie from the Greek mythology to a movie Clash of the Titans. The story of Perseus is told differently.

These stories would form an important part of the culture’s religion and are referred to today as mythology. One great hero from ancient Greek mythology is Perseus. According to both ancient standards and today’s standards, Perseus would be seen as a great hero. The many actions that Perseus is said to have done in his adventures prove his heroism.

The settings are the Grey Sisters Place, some place with Athena, island of the Gorgons, Into the air, and Atlas’s island. The settings are different because it has more than Perseus. The events are that Perseus was sent off the quest, He then gets a lot of gifts after that he goes to see the Grey sisters and steals their eye then goes to see Atlas she gives him the hat of darkness. After that goes to Medusa’s cave and he cuts off Medusa’s head, he escapes Medusa's sisters. The event is different because he has a lot of things to do before going and killing medusa and in the poem Perseus he just got a shield and cut her head.
The archetypal hero cycle is a series of 17 steps, which explain a hero’s journey from his initiation up until he gains his freedom to live. As explained by Campbell in his book, The Hero With A Thousand Faces, the hero cycle is a series “of three phases, including the departure… initiation,… and the return” (Handout). These phases of initiation, departure and return break down the 17-stepped hero cycle into smaller, more specific segments, which are included in those three main phases. Following the guidelines that Campbell set in place Perseus is the epitome of an archetypal Greek hero. With the blood of both gods and royalty, Perseus was brought up in a rich environment where he would eventually grow into his destiny. From the moment Perseus left his home, his hero cycle had already begun. Perseus’ hero cycle would not be finished until the young royal returned home and completed his 17 steps.
Pericles of Ancient Greece once said, “What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.” He lived out this motto all throughout his life; in politics, war, and his personal life before rule. Pericles was over all one of the best leaders of Athens.
In the epic poem, The Odyssey, by Homer, Odysseus goes through many trials while trying to return home from the Trojan War. On his voyage home, he must visit the Land of the Dead, evade the Sirens, Scylla and Charybdis and when he does arrive home, participate in a tricky reunion with his wife, Penelope. All of these examples show that Odysseus has extreme determination and perseverance. Perseverance is an excellent quality that few possess which can spark achievement.
Perseus grew up to be a strong fearless lad. One day he claimed to King Polydectes, “Oh, Host and Benefactor, I owe you too much gratitude to repay you with the common gift of a horse. I shall bring you the head of Medusa!”(Evslin.110) Perseus set off for his mission, he encountered the gray sisters and the apple nymphs forcing them to give him information about Medusa’s location. Then he went to Medusa with three gifts from the apple nymphs: a sword, a shield, and the Cap of Darkness. Successfully Perseus killed Medusa and while bringing Medusa’s head towards the island of Sephiros. He encountered a sea serpent who was creating trouble by the nearby town of Cepheus. Perseus drew out Medusa’s head and turned the sea serpent into stone. Throughout Perseus’s mission he encountered many obstacles and he handled each challenge in a smart and clever way, unlike King
Every hero in Greek mythology produces some type of lesson for all of us to take heed to. Each hero fell in and out of favor with the gods and was forced to do unthinkable tasks. But, without these heroes, Greek mythology would not be what it is today. The heroes of their time are what made the history of the Greeks come together. As shown by Hercules, Perseus, and Theseus, a great deal of courage was required of them along with sacrifices.
The legend of Perseus is told in many different ways, in two particular ways they are similar but yet quite different. The movie Clash of the Titans is primarily a story of Perseus and his dangerous journey to save the princess Andromeda, while the Edith Hamilton’s Mythology is a story of Perseus, his relationship with his mother and journeys to her.
When Zeus impregnated her she gave birth to Perseus, the son that will overthrow her dad in the prophecy . After giving birth to Perseus, Danae’s father trapped her in a box that was washed away by sea . Contained, Danae recited: “O Father Zeus, send a blessed relief” . This quote illustrates that even thought Zeus impregnated her and caused conflicts between her and her father, he was able to help her. By listening to her distress, the fisherman Dictys was able to find them and bring them to safety .
Perseus is later found by soldiers who take him to the city of Argos, where he is brought before King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia during their celebration of the war against the gods. King Cepheus makes arrogant statements towards the gods, and the Queen Cassiopeia compares their daughter Andromeda to Aphrodite. When Zeus finds out about the destruction of a statue of him and the celebration of war by Cepheus and Cassiopeia, he becomes furious. Hades then appears before his Zeus on Mount Olympus and argues that the gods must retaliate against the revolt, and convinces Zeus that he be allowed to destroy Argos. In the movie, Perseus, the mortal son of Zeus, fights the monsters of the underworld to stop them from taking over the heavens and earth. The story according to the Greeks, Perseus, the mortal son of Zeus, goes on an adventure to recieve the head of Medusa to save his mom from marrying King Polydectes and along the way falls in love Princess Andromeda. Between the two stories there are similarities and differences in each version.
