The book Things Fall Apart was about the colonization of the Europeans in Africa, but it was written just when the Europeans were giving up the colonies. The missionaries who came their failed to realize that the natives had been able to function by themselves for thousands of years and replaced their culture with their own forms of religion and government. The European view of imperialism was to help the natives through new religion, education, and customs. In the book, when the Europeans arrived in Africa, they forced their religion onto the natives.
