Did you know that the second leading deaths in 13 to 19 year olds in the United States is suicide besides homicides! The author, Barbara Mantel who wrote the article “Teen Suicide” may have focus more on logos and pathos and not enough on ethos. Her main idea was stating that new studies such as school prevention programs, therapy and medicine or even screenings will have an effect on suicidal victims. Thinking that these studies, will increase understanding of teen suicides and lead to a better identification and treatment of high risk teens. Although she may have been lacking ethos in her article, her other rhetorical reasons are very effective She proved many facts to prove her ideas are logical. They were little snippets such as her saying “This is an essential tool in preventing crisis of a suicide. This only takes a few seconds, available to whoever and decreases economic and systemic burdens by reducing unnecessary intervention.”(Mantel) This gives the reader the ability to trust her on the issue to state that her opinion about teen suicide is right. Another example she stated in her article “ Clark Flatt president of the Jason Foundation, and supporters announce the foundation’s teen suicide awareness and prevention campaign, in Beverly Hills, California on Sept. 18, 2002. “ from all appearances…my son loved life. But on July 16 1997, everything changed. Jason became a statistic of the Silent Epidemic of youth suicide… I will never hug my son again. But I can and I will work alongside you… perhaps to save your friend, your neighbor’s child, relative or even your own son or daughter, as Flatt Stated.”(Mantel) This shows reinsurance that whoever went through it are willing to help anyone for they don’t feel the pain.
