Task 1
Every company or organisation has aims and objectives. An aim is the
purpose for the company to exist and objectives are the steps that
will need to be taken to reach the aim. These are necessary as it
gives the employees direction and a goal to work towards. It also
provides a framework around which to create plans. Companies can have
a set of aims and they are usually referred to as the company’s
mission statement. Mission statements can be viewed by the public on
company reports and their websites.
Many organisations may share the same or similar aims such as: -
Ø To make a profit
Ø To increase profits
Ø To increase market share
Ø To survive
Charity organisations may have different aims as they are a
non-profit-making organisation.
Aims are usually more general compare to objectives. Objectives are
always SMART. This stands for: -

Ø Specific – Objectives should specify what the company wants to
achieve.
Ø Measurable – the company should be able to measure whether you are
meeting the objectives or not.
Ø Achievable - Are the objectives you set, achievable and attainable?
Ø Realistic – Can the company realistically achieve the objectives?
Ø Time – When does the company want to achieve the set objectives?
Ø In a large organisation each department may have different
objectives e.g. the marketing department may have the objective of
increasing brand awareness by the end of the financial year or the
sales department may have the objective to increase sales by 5% by the
end of the year. But for the company to succeed each department will
be working towards the same aim.

Ø To be the best selling, most informative, most recognised and most
up to date newspaper in the city.
Their objectives may be:-
Ø To increase market share by 10%
Once an organization develops a mission statement, the next step in strategic planning is to align the company’s goals. The goals for a business should reflect the vision and mission of an organization, as well as assist in achieving the overall purpose of the company. Establishing organizational goals promotes the business’ mission and specifies the focus in which staff members should implement in day to day operations.
This will help us increase our market share percentage and eventually generate more income in the company.

The Mission, Vision and Values of a company play a Fundamental role in Strategy Formulation and Strategic planning. We will discuss throughout this assignment, how developing effective mission, vision and values can help shape, develop and guide a firms Strategic choices. They reflect the firm's fundamental core ideology. At the most basic level a mission statement can describe the firms overall purpose for being. A mission statement explains the company’s or department’s reason for existence. It describes the company (or department), what it does and its overall intention. The mission statement supports the vision and serves to communicate purpose and direction to employees, customers, vendors and other stakeholders. The mission can change to reflect a company or a department’s priorities and methods to accomplish its vision. A vision statement describes the organization as it would appear in a future successful state.
The managers must set organizational goals aligned with the company mission. This will provide a strategy for achieving those goals. For example, planning can be seen at every level such as creating goals for sales as well as for the customer experience (Higgins, 1994).

This does not only give a clue to customer s about the business, but also provides a direction for the organisation keep itself on track and carefully avoids deviating from that path to achieve its purpose.
An organisation’s mission is the back bone of all strategic decisions; the mission will have an influence on all activities performed within the organisation, because if they aren’t achieving their mission an organisation is failing. The long term strategic goals of an organisation should directly aim to achieve their mission and these goals are what performance can be measured off. Without specific goals attempting to measure performance is pointless, and identifying who or what the main focus of these goals is the key to optimisation.
