Psychiatrist According to Derek Landy, “Talking about one's feelings defeats the purpose of having those feelings. Once you try to put the human experience into words, it becomes little more than a spectator sport. Everything must have a cause, and a name. Every random thought must have a root in something else.” Psychiatry is the study of mental health and focuses on recognizing and treating people with certain conditions and disorders. Psychiatrists are very imperative to society because they help people who struggle from illnesses cope with everyday life and behave in ways that are accepted in society(“Psychiatrists”).

Some places where psychiatrists work include office settings, private hospitals, state hospitals, community mental health centers, and some government agencies(“Psychiatrists”). They are also found in psychiatric hospitals, residential mental health facilities, and research centers(“Psychiatric Technicians and Aides”). In each environment, many things could happen to where it could be considered hazardous to a psychiatrist. Many times psychiatrists witness their patients going through a lot of emotional pain which is stressful and emotionally draining. In some cases, they see troubling behavior that turns violent(“Psychiatrist”). One thing that should be considered is that there are many physically demanding tasks such as lifting patients which increases injury and illness rates(“Psychiatric Technicians and …show more content…

Classes taken in high school should include biology, chemistry, physics, algebra, geometry, calculus, psychology, sociology, history, and english(“Psychiatrists”). Many psychiatrists have post secondary certificates and have experience as a nursing assistant or a practical nurse. They also tend to have degrees in psychiatric or mental health technology, also including a high school diploma(“Psychiatric Technicians and Aides”). To apply to medical schools, a bachelor’s degree is required. Medical schools take four years to complete with another four years after for residency training(“Psychiatrist”). Along with education, certain certifications are needed. All physicians must be licensed in order to practice medicine. Graduates must pass a licensing test given by the board of medical examiners for the state in which the want to work in(“Psychiatrists”). Most states do not license technicians. For states that do require a license, technicians are required to complete an accredited education program, pass an exam, and pay a fee(“Psychiatric Technicians and Aides”). To become a board certified psychiatrist, a license is achieved by passing an exam(“Psychiatrist”). This field is not very competitive according to numbers. From 2014 to 2024, the percent change is 12.1
