People can experience traumatic events in many different ways; divorce, war, moving or even rape. A traumatic event is an incident that causes physical, emotional, spiritual, or psychological harm (Cafasso, 2016, para. 1). Traumatic events may not particularly happen to you directly but can affect those around you in various ways. From my previous work experience numerous individuals can handle a traumatic event in a healthy manner and others may experience depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating and even changes in appetite. Such events can be managed either by seeking out professional or spiritual help. Trying to quit drinking is going to be challenging for Greg as he would like to keep alcohol in the home for his wife, also, finding a place to go for treatment not only for alcohol but for letting the child die in his care. Since the child dying in Greg’s care, he has felt the need to look for someone to talk too immediately in regards to how he is feeling. If Greg were a friend of mine, I would have had him talk to a crisis counselor in his area. Greg is showing signs of stress, when he stated that he needed someone to talk to right away, that was a trigger for me. I would then be concerned about him drinking to the point where he is no longer in control and possibly taking his life because of the guilt he is feeling. In talking to a crisis counselor, the professional will do intake and an assessment to see what the issues are and his history with how the drinking had begun. This can be a very intense process since Greg had been drinking for many years and it affected not only him but also his job and possibly his marriage. After completing the assessment, the professional with then refer him to a level 1 outpatient treatment.
