I want to thank every one of you for the support, that you have gave not only on the campaign trail, but also during my two years in the United States Congress, this term. As you know election season is around the corner, and I am hoping to have your support again as we being to campaign for my re-election for the great 5th District of Minnesota. I am writing to inform you all my successes, failures, routines, and what I was responsible for during my time on Capitol Hill. Through the leadership of Minority Leader Don Beyer, we took a different approach in bringing the party together. In party caucuses, we as a party spoke of uniting as one to attempt to minimize the disadvantages we endured from past election results. We had less seats in Congress, so we as a party came up with a variety of ways to combat this issue, one solution would to find the weakest link in the Republican Party in attempts to sway their vote on key bills that we wanted to pass. I was a strong advocate for Bobby Scott’s “Parole and Probation Incentive Act. I felt supporting this bill was important to you all because overcrowding in prisons, not only in Minnesota, but the United States. The purpose of Bobby Scott’s bill was, “[it’s] a bill that would allow for those who are in probation, parole, or supervised release, on both the federal and state level, to receive a Good Time Credits for time they have followed the rules of their probation or parole (Bobby Scott’s Bill). Transparency is needed in government because it provides for a check against fraud. I want to mention to my constituents that I received two letters from interest groups that attempted to bribe me with monetary funds to change my …show more content…

There were bills sponsored by some of my colleagues that passed through their respective committee, but was not heard on the floor. There were also bills passes through committee and made it on to the floor for debate and vote, but ultimately did not achieve the necessary votes for passage into law. A bill that I wish would have been enacted was John Conyers the Law Enforcement Standards and Safety Act. The purpose of Conyers’ bill was. “to increase funding for law enforcement and set standards for state and local police departments, and for other purposes” (John Conyers’ Bill). This was one of my favorite bills that was proposed to Congress, and I feel we dropped the ball. Today the United States is facing a catastrophe of issues dealing with violence against citizens and violence against the police. This bill would have allowed for federal standards to be put in place. These standards would have provided solutions to end violence dealing with law enforcement. Another bill, that I felt would have been of great success and importance to you all was Bobby Scott’s Parole and Probation Incentive Act. Unfortunately, this bill died in
