The Pros And Cons Of Human Genetic Engineering

1775 Words4 Pages

Human genetic engineering is a technique of direct modification of the genome by the use of molecular engineering. In the recent developments, gene modification is referred to as gene editing, and it can be applied in various ways. Such ways may include germline genetic modification and somatic genetic modification. In somatic gene modification, the genes in the cells of a person are either cut, added, or changed with the aim of reducing the chances of a medical condition. Germline genetic modification involves changing the genes within a sperm, egg, or an early embryo. This technique may be referred to as “inheritable genetic modification” or “editing of genes for production”. When it is successful than not only every cell in the person developed …show more content…

This technique alters the way a child perceives life which may be different from ordinary people. According to Hemmy Cho, “It is the perception of most people that everyone is created in a certain way for a reason”. But how will people's perception of life change when certain characteristics in them are altered? People may think that when a doctor or a scientist alters the genes in a child, then it is morally unethical. But if you think from the state of mind of the embryo's mother? “No one ever desired to have bad genes which will be inherited by their child or do they want their child to be disabled in any way. Hence, for this reason, I would say it is okay to conduct human genetic engineering” (Cho). This will help a couple who had opted for adoption to have kids without the undesired conditions such as Down's syndrome. “Through his procedure, couples can have blood-related children without genetic disorders as it happens in most cases” …show more content…

Wadhwa expresses concern about the price that the developing baby must pay for human experiments. “According to a Worthington post which describes the procedure as being a combination of usability, low cost and power are tormenting and terrifying considering the potentiality that a time will come when people will be editing living creatures at cheap costs in their basements. It is a common sense that nothing cheap is reliable or harmless for a child” (Wadhwa). This is unimaginable cruelty which should not be tolerated at any cost. Human editing is not much different from
