Achieving and maintaining good health is an important aspect of life. “Health is a state of complete physical and social well-being” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], n.d.). Having great health prolongs life and reduces the risk of disease, injury, and mental illness, moreover, knowing the determinants of health and disease prevention are paramount to achieving and maintaining good health. The Turning Points There were two international conferences on health promotion that served as the turning points in the transition from disease prevention to health promotion. The five categories are policymaking, social factors, health services, individual behavior, and biology and genetics (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2018). The regulation on taxing tobacco is an example of policymaking and greatly reduces the amount of people who use the product. Driving the prices up discourages the populace in buying the product. Access to health services and quality of health services impacts a person’s health status. Some barriers that contribute to this impact are the inflated cost of medicines and health care services, lack of insurance coverage, and limited language access. Individual behavior can be both beneficial and fatal to an individual’s health. Some determinants that can cause negative impact in our health are the lack of a balanced diet, physical inactivity, the use of drugs, and personal hygiene. These determinants can promote disease like heart disease, diabetes, and organ failure. The lack of a proper diet can lead to obesity which can cause diabetes and heart disease from the fatty and high sugar foods that contribute to a bad diet. It is important to stay physically active as it has proven to lower the risk of heart disease and reduce weight and body
