Bullying is getting more and more common in high school, which increases the frequency of suicides. In order to diminish this problem, the Wyoming Area School Board must hire more hall monitors who will specifically look for bullying in the halls. In addition to the hall monitors they need to form anonymous meetings that can be set aside directly to help the students being bullied and also set up more personalized anti-bullying/anti-suicide programs for the students.
Problem:
When many people hear that a teenager committed suicide they often automatically assume that it was due to bullying and harassment as many times, this is a correct assumption. When you go to Google and type, “Teenage suicide due to…,” the first thing that is suggested is bullying.
I’m sure you can remember this as no one can forget; in 2012 four teenagers in our county, Luzern County, killed themselves in a matter of a week. As a community, this was an extremely devastating occurrence. We spent all day in the gym playing any kind of sport that we could with all of the staff kids, or playing tag-hide and go seek until eventually we got screamed at for running through the halls by his aunt, Miss Heather, my mom’s boss. The summer days we spent at the YMCA were the most innocent and fun-filled. I never thought that he could do what he did, almost two years ago. As the years drifted by, I lost touch with him because we both no longer went to the YMCA in the summer due to the fact that we were getting older and his aunt no longer worked there. Even though we lost touch, I always knew he struggled with his weight and got verbally abused because of it. We had mutual friends in middle school and they always told me he was getting made fun
