There is a national debate about arming teachers. Everytime a tragedy (such as the Parkland shooting) happens the debate is resparked. While it may be painful to think about, this is a conversation we need to have.There are many sides to this argument with each side believing they are correct.

The idea of arming teachers has been around since the Columbine high school shooting in 1999. People want to arm teachers, because they feel it will prevent or at least lessen school shootings and the devastation it leaves behind. Columbine survivor Patrick Neville, has been fighting for guns in schools for years, proposing a bill which would allow ”Every law-abiding citizen who holds a concealed carry permit, issued from their chief law enforcement officer, the right to carry concealed in order to defend themselves and most importantly our children from the worst-case scenarios” In multiple states it is legal for teachers to carry arms and some of our officials want to implement …show more content…

It is their job to teach kids, not to fill in for the police. Teachers are not paid nearly enough to be responsible for so many kids’ lives. Establishing stricter gun control would get to the root of the problem by preventing school shooters from causing so much harm, so quickly, to unsuspecting communities.

Some people believe having armed teachers could be a good thing. If teachers had guns, it could be easier to stop school shootings. Easy access to a gun could save many lives right? One of the many downsides is that it puts a lot of pressure on teachers’ shoulders. Since most people don’t come to school expecting school shootings having armed teachers would not necessarily cause less casualties.
