The Pit and the Pendulum
The Pit and the Pendulum is a story about a man confined to a prison cell and tortured mercilessly in Toledo Spain during the Spanish Inquisition. Edgar Allen Poe's story is powerful because the prisoner tells the story of his torture. Given this you know he is going to survive which helps make the mystery so much more complex.
The plot is very believable and consistent. Poe shows great detail in the setting of the dungeon. The plot is hard to fathom, in that it is difficult to believe that a man could survive so much adversity without going crazy. The consistency in the story is the addition of a new problem for him to solve after he finishes the previous one.It is hard to imagine the prisoner could ever survive his immense torture but he did. In the end the prisoner was rescued by General Lasalle after Lasalle invaded Toledo. The ending was proper for the plot, because he deserved to be rewarded after his immense torture. It is a major coincidence that they invaded Toledo to save the falling prisoner from his death. The plot is suspenseful. It kept you on you're toes at every moment because of the ever danger of death in each paragraph. The narrators in both stories were faced with copious challenges. But antithetically, the narrators both meet these challenges in completely different ways. While Brown confronted his challenges with despair and pessimism, the narrator from the Pit and the Pendulum faced his trials with optimism and bravery, which in the end gave him hope. From this one can say that an optimistic outlook and the will to fight are necessities in the great battle of life.
Poe’s character is clearly unwell from the beginning. The idea of the protagonist conflicting with something as mundane as an “Evil eye” suggest that the narrator may be a bit unstable, however the extent of that instability is not fleshed out until later. Poe’s stories “The Cask of Amontillado”, “The Black Cat”, “The Fall of the House of Usher”, and “The Masque of the Red Death” all share a common setting. “The Fall of the House of Usher” has a setting of creepy and dark setting. The setting helps with this story because the rest of the Usher family dis off and the house falls.
The accused in "The Pit and the Pendulum" is obviously being persecuted. For what religion or practice we do not know. For what crime it is not said. The prisoner does not even question his guilt or innocence. The accused in this story, to whom Poe does not give a name, is subjected to three life threatening situations.
First off, Poe did an excellent job of hiding the physical identity of the narrator by not including a gender, name, age or even features of what the narrator looks like. Not being able to understand what the character looks like is a bit aggravating because knowing the gender you could come up with other possible motives for killing him other than his eye. The narrators relationship is never explained but we have to assume that he has some type of relationship with the old man. I think that was Poe's intention so the reader could have a complete understanding that people can commit crimes without having a reason. The narrator is not secretive when expressing his thoughts towards the old man. For example the narrator says " Object there was none. Passion there was none. I love the old man. He had never wrong me. He had never given me insult." (42 Backpack Literature). Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 19, 1809. His first book was published in 1827. In 1829 Al Aaraaf Tamerlane, and Minor Poems, Poe's second book was published. Poe became the editor of The Southern Literary Messenger in 1834 after his lawyer persuaded them to publish some of his stories and make him an editor. During this time his mark on American Literature began. Three of Poe's well-known stories are “The Cask of Amontillado”, which was published in 1846, “The Tell-Tale Heart, which was published in 1843, and “The Pit and the Pendulum”, which was published in 1842. In these three stories like most of Poe's stories they deal with the deep, dark, psychological side of the human brain. In Poe's short stories “The Cask of Amontillado”, “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Pit and the Pendulum”, Poe use three common motifs; death, fear or terror, and madness.
Edgar Allen Poe’s tone of the story is delusional and uneasy. The tone is of an insane mind. The story has mystery, death and the possibility of the supernatural, this short story is a work of Gothic writing. The setting is dark and shadowy which leads the reader to connect with the narrator.
To begin the story Poe has a man who sets the scenery. The man sounds like he has a sound mind. But the narrator is trying to build his case for his sanity. The idea of the obsession that the narrator has with the eye of his employer builds to the question of whether or not this was a sign of a man who has an unstable mind or is it all just a ploy to get away with murder.
Poe’s themes in his poems and short stories reveal a Gothic look on the world that includes morbid imagery that some people would not be comfortable with reading. In The Pit and the Pendulum, the narrator has to make a drastic decision that not most would have to make: the choice of how to die. Although, the true horror of The Pit and the Pendulum is not just a matter of the choice of death, I believe it is also in the horror of no matter the result, he will die either way. Death in this situation is unavoidable and creates a strain in the human subconscious because of the natural human instinct to want to live. Burduck in his book Grim Phantasms: Fear in Poe’s Short Fiction writes that “of all the emotions by and affecting the mind, feat most intrigued Poe” (5).
