An idea that is repeated amongst the writings of dystopian societies is that the societies came from a utopian origin built with the intent to make life better for everyone. However, these “perfect” societies are far from it. As is seen in the short story “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” by Ursula Le Guin and the film “Nosedive” from Black Mirror, there is almost always pain along with happiness. However, these two works used suffering in different ways. In the story “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” the idea that there has to be pain with happiness is known and is used to create the utopia. In “Nosedive” the pain that comes with the happiness is not known initially but, eventually comes into realization by the main character. The two also differ in how the main ideas that built the Utopias. In Ursula Le Guin’s short story a utopian society is described an absolutely content population. They live in peace and harmony with themselves and their environment. La Guin takes nearly two and a half pages to describe the beauty and harmony of the city of Omelas. It is on the third page that la Guin asks the reader “Do you believe? Do you accept the festival, the city, the joy? No? Then let me describe one more thing” (3). …show more content…

Unfortunately, in her downward spiral, Lacie realizes the pain of having a low rating. She sadly become the suffering which allows the higher rating persons to have their happiness and expensive homes and clothing. Unlike the people in “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas”, the higher rated people in “Nosedive” do not know the exact suffering that allows for their happiness. All that is known is that a low rating is looked down upon, and is not ideal nor wanted. It takes a case like Lacie’s for someone to know the suffering, while in “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” the population of Omelas know of the exact pain and suffering that keeps them in their content state of
