Sex trade, or in other words, prostitution, is considered the world’s oldest profession, the profession in which a woman sells her body for the sexual pleasure of a customer in exchange for money. This controversial issue has seemed to stir up many ideas, opinions, and conceptions on what seems to be such a negative view not only in a social aspect, but in moral one too. All this time we have been told that the sex trade around the world and in the U.S is such an unpropitious path women take, but why is it that we only seem to take in all the antipathetic information regarding prostitution? Due to the fact that it will now be decriminalized, more and more women won’t be reluctant to steer their lives toward the path of prostitution, believing that it isn’t morally wrong. Also people fear that it would advocate the issue of violence. According to the article, “Is Regulating the Solution to Sex Trafficking?” by Karen Coca, it states, “Although regulating sex trafficking can have beneficial issues… the bottom line is that it would validate sexual violence.” This statement although, can be considered inaccurate. Prostitutes have one of the highest rates of being assaulted, raped, and even being murdered. Since what they are doing isn’t legal, the prostitutes obviously would hesitate in calling the police, therefore resulting in even worse situations. On the other hand, if it is regulated the government can have a system of protection towards the women that prohibits mistreatment, which decreases the rates of violence among them. If the sex trade is decriminalized, it will aid in having a cleaner and healthier environment. Although the use of contraceptives is available, many of them don’t utilize it. Most of the time, it’s usually because the customer doesn’t want to use it, or because they don’t have access to any. Due to this complication, many sexually transmitted diseases and sexually transmitted infections are being spread which alters the health of both women and men. Due to lack of knowledge or access, they fail to use safety measures such as contraceptives.” Due to the fact that no medical attention is available, the rates of STD’s and deaths do go up and make it more dangerous to work because not only are they putting their life at risk, but also the life of the customers. By regulating it, the government can monitor and regulate the laws regarding constant checkups on both the prostitutes and the customers. In brothels such as in Amsterdam and Nevada, where prostitution is regulated, they test workers routinely for sexually transmitted infection.
