Throughout the beginning of time, there have been millions of families. Most of the families have been similar, however no two families are the same. When it comes to the lifestyles that children have it is generally based off of the way their parents live and have raised them. Whether it be a family who sits down at dinner every night or a family that never talks to each other, young children can’t decide to have change. Family situations have a crucial effect on children’s lives. Unfortunately, there are many cases where one of the parents of a child is absent. One of the positive effects includes the adult children being able to save money. The child could save for his or her own place, sleep at the house of the parents while he or she searches for a job, or stay there while he or she attends a nearby college. Arguably the most effective reason to stay at your parent’s house would be by making the decision to go to school. That way, the child can focus on college rather than working his or her hardest to pay extra bills that would be unnecessary if the child stayed at home. If the child is already in a situation where he or she do not have a lot of money, then the best investment of time would be in getting a degree. Another positive effect includes the capability of everyone in the household to bond and make new memories. One of the most heartbreaking times in parents’ lives can be watching their children leave the house, generally for college. If the child is fortunate enough to have the college located near his or her parents’ house, extra time can be spent together as a family. Although this may not be the case for every home it could be a possibility. A child living with his or her parents may cause stunted development in the child, which can have negative impacts. The causes include absence of a parent in a child’s life, adult children living with parents, and low income families. Each of these causes have multiple different effects, some of which are less obvious than the others. The effects of absence of a parent in a child’s life are rise to behavioral problems in children, financial concerns leading to not being able to give the children what they want, and working long hours which would mean parents being unable to spend a lot of time with children. Another cause was adult children living with parents, and the effects are adult children can save money, more memories and bonding, and a stunted development in children. An additional cause is low income families and the effects comprise of lower academic achievement, lack of nutrition, unsafe Living conditions, and family stability. Inadequate child care and single parenting effects children in many ways. They won’t have the care they need and deserve as a child. When it comes time for them to have a family, they will treat their children the same way they were treated because they don’t know any better. Many parents should stop and rethink their decisions when deciding to have children or maybe to get a divorce. The decisions they make will stick with them for the rest of their lives.
Single parent homes provide clear communication between the parent and the child. Communication is something that has to be developed between one person to the other person. It really helps, because it gets children use to being told no. Also it gets children to think of other ways to compromise using their mouths instead of resulting to violence. It allows for a clear understanding between two people. In Publisher Carl E. Pickhardt, PhD’s article “Why Single Parents Can Parent Adolescents Well” he writes, “With much t talk about and less time to talk, busyness causes single parents to speak directly and to the point, not hesitating to speak up when difficult issues need to be addressed, and treating conflict not as a challenge to their authority, but as a talking point.” (Pickhardt 6).
Poverty has many influences on children under the age of 16. The research fined out that in recent year, an increasing number of children become poor, live under the poverty condition- childhood poverty lasted 10 years or more. So, what does the poverty exactly mean to children? According to Brook-Gunn and Duncan, The kids who live in the poverty condition have the low quality of schools; more likely to have domestic violence and become homeless; less access to friends, services, etc. (Brooks-Gunn et all, 1997) That points out the disadvantage and how the family income influence youngsters overall childhood, since under the poverty condition, they children do not have enough money to support for their necessary needs, they will more likely to have low self-confidence and hard to blend in with their peers. Poverty has impact on children’s achievement in several different ways. Payne (2003) maintained that the poverty could affect children achievement though emotional, mental, financial, and role models (Payne, 2003). A parent's involvement typically begins early in a child's life. When a child first opens his or her eyes they should see their parent's smiling faces looking back at them. As the child continues to grow up and develop their parent's constant presence in their lives provides structure. But for some children they do not receive this kind of stability from their parents due to early separation from their parents. Children can be separated from their parents by a multitude of causes like death, adoption, incarnated, foster care, substance abuse and others. Children at the age of three years old or younger are very sensitive to the issue. Parents play an important role in our lives. Our parents help us form who we want to become and our own identity. When children are separated permanently or for an extended period of time from their parents, this can cause a child to respond to the situation in a negative manner (McIntosh, 2010). The loss of a parent or both parents can be detrimental to child's life. The loss can leave behind a scaring effect on a child and could remain with them their entire lives. The purpose of this research is to examine the negative impacts neglectful parenting has on children. Through the examination of the neglectful parenting style, it becomes evident the negative impact at which a child’s developmental need of family socialization is not met. In most cases, people have been raised with both parents, which is ideal in this society. Fifty years ago, the typical American family included a mother, father and their children. However today, “One in every four children in the United States are being raised by a single parent. Experts point to a variety of factors to explain the high US figure including a cultural shift toward greater acceptance of single parent rearing.”(Armario). As these numbers continue to rise due to modern day ideas and the increasing divorce rate, the children of single parents struggle. “Today 41% of all births were to unmarried women.”(Hymowitz).
