Cultural myths still exist today year of 2016 in the United States. Some myths include those of white supremacy. In Gary Colombo’s essay “Created Equal: The Myth of the Melting Pot” he describes how white supremacy is a cultural myth that takes place in immigrants lives. The myth of melting pot includes a lot of cultures and races into one, which is to be a diverse American culture, and to all be considered in the white supremacy. The myth of the melting pot is a myth which many immigrants who come to the United states have lived in because they heard that when they come over they will live the life which all white have lived and being wealthy. Colombo explains the myth of white supremacy, which has grown over the years. Colombo goes on to say: “ the myth of white supremacy is a powerful American fantasy- it is the negative counterpart of the melting pot ideal: instead of the equal and harmonious blending of cultures, it proposes a racial and ethic hierarchy based on the “natural superiority” of Anglo Americans” (570). Immigrants have always lived in a myth that if they move out of their own country to the U.S they will live a happy life and are like those of the America, which will always be a fantasy for immigrants that live in America. While Colombo defines these issues in his essay, Tizon provides issues of racism in his essay “The Myth of the melting pot”. Tizon explains how important it is for them to have mestizo features and how his father had past experiences of being more American. Tizon goes on to write that “pinch the bridge of my nose then tug on it […] you should do this everyday. If you do, your nose will become more tangus. Sharper. Narrower. You’ll look more mestizo” (646). The father does what he does in order to be more mestizo. The reason why he does this is because he thinks that White supremacy takes place in the father life because he wants to fit into the American dream that he has always had. Colombo goes to write “Immigrants take on new identities- and a new set of cultural myths- because they want to become members of the community, equal members with all the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of their fellow citizens”(569). The American dream always takes place in immigrant’s lives. Many immigrants want to live the same as those, which they think they need to have the same lifestyle and identities as Americans. They want to do and be like everyone else. Like the quotes say “equal members”, which is true when immigrant do want to be like their fellow citizens.make more clear Immigrants want to become more like the Americans, which makes then think it is impossible to accomplish. When immigrant’s moves they can adapt to some styles like for example Tizon explains it in his essay. Tizon goes on to says “first was the abandonment of our native language and our unquestioned embrace of English, even though for my parents that abandonment meant cutting themselves off from a fluency they would never have again” (645). The fact that Tizon’s parents had to move and learn a new language and somewhat leave their native language, by learning English immigrants learn new identities how to become more American. People have to change their personal lives that they were used to be living.
