The Lightning Thief Characters Percy Jackson is the main character of the book and is the narrator as well. He is twelve years (1) old with ADHD and dyslexia (7) and describes himself as a demigod, or half-blood (1), meaning half [Greek] god, half human. He eventually finds out that his father is Poseidon and that his mother is human, hence making him a demigod. Annabeth Chase is a demigod as well, daughter of the Greek goddess, Athena; her human father, unknown (96). As stated on page 95, when Percy asks Annabeth about her parents, specifically her mother, she answers very straight forward and simply, “Athena. Goddess of wisdom and battle.” In addition, taking on after her mother, she is very talented in these skills as well. Grover Underwood is described as Percy’s best friend, as well as his protector, meaning he must defend him under any and all circumstances. The traveling itself is hard enough for the three, making it is the main conflict due to the fact that they are given no less than ten days to reach Los Angeles, on ground, making the expedition longer overall because if they were to fly, they’d endanger themselves by possibly angering and struck by the gods, as Percy's mom made him avoid planes as a whole by telling him they couldn’t afford using one for transportation when he was young (147).
