It can be said that, Those who are involved in conflict are often changed by their experiences, it can also be said that, Survivor of conflict are forever shaped by their experience, however the latter statement is somewhat incorrect as it is speaking more as a definite, while is reality people are not always changed by experiences, and even still those who are changed, are not always permanently different because of their experiences. However people involved in conflicts are often changed in one way or another, such as the Main Character of the novel: The Lieutenant, Daniel Rooke. The Lieutenant also includes several other types of conflict that can and does change people, such as racism and armed conflicts, although these are not the major …show more content…

An underlying theme in The Lieutenant is Racism, in The Lieutenant the British Settlers consider the Indigenous Australians (specifically the people they encounter are that of the Eora Ethnic group) to be savages and below them, while the British considered themselves superior and believed that their actions were justified, which led to much conflict between both groups. Racism was a major conflict that affected many societies all over the world and the effects are still being felt now, for example Racism was a large issue in countries such as America and there are still many that cling to this prejudice and many who despise people groups, such as white Americans because of the way they were treated by said people group in their lifetime, and aboriginal communities are still feeling the effects from actions taken against them by the British settlers after they began to colonise and spread across Australia. In this situation it is not necessarily individuals that have been effected by the conflicts caused by Racism, but rather groups and …show more content…

However, although arm conflicts usually effect groups and communities, they are not the only ones changed by it. Many individuals who are involved in or effected by voile the armed conflicts are typically injured or displaced, forcing them to move to foreign places and causing them to adjust their way of life. Many people do not and cannot return home after fleeing violent conflicts and their outlook on life may be drastically changed, for example a person may have lived a happy, joyous life until they were forced to relocate due to a dangerous armed conflict in the area. The loss of friends, family and their home may leave them depressed and cause them to withdraw from others as they struggle to adjust to their new, less satisfying life. When Daniel Rooke left his home, he eventually joined the Marines and witnessed violent relation between the British and Aborigines and was determined to prevent further unjust bloodshed when the party he was sent with, was going to murder several aboriginal men to make an example, but he attempted and successfully warned the aboriginals before his party to make their move, as he was changed by his experiences with violence and wanted to see no more of
