Soccer, also known as Futbol, is a very exciting game to watch and play. Soccer is an intriguing sport for a number of reasons: its dynamics in different player positions, the changing of speeds, and a hint of uncertainty where a twist of fate can turn a game around. In soccer, every player contributes to the overall result; even the players sitting on the bench can contribute to the general winning spirit of a team. Although Soccer is no doubt a team game, there has been the argument as to who contributes more to a win: is it the defender or the forward players? They must also be alert and ready to back up their teammates when a mistake is made. Defenders have to very careful of making mistakes since even a small slip-up on their part could result in a goal for the opposing team, and thus, a loss. There are many ways of being a successful defender. To be a successful defender, you must show consistency throughout every game, be reliable, and have very sound performances. Although it is very rare, a defender can dribble the ball up the entire field to score the ball for its team. When defenders play this role correctly, there is no ball to get into the goal, no matter how good a forward is. A famous Women’s US Soccer Defender, Christie Rampone, once stated, “If we score, we might win. If they never score, we can’t lose.” A team’s chance of winning will increase each time a goal is scored. For this reason, it is important for a defender to play a great game to ensure that the other team does not score a goal. For example, if my team is up one goal in a championship match with time about to expire and the opposing team is on a fast counter-attack getting ready to score, they could tie the game by scoring the goal; which will lead to extra time. But if the defense stops the opposing team from scoring that goal, we will win the game. A Quality that both a defender and a forward can share is the ability to sense the opposing team, read their intentions and act in unison for a team’s victory. For this reason, we cannot say which position contributes more to a win: whether it is the defender or the forward because they both are irreplaceable to a team and could not work effectively without each
