Parents, there once was a time when a person could say or do something and it would only be witnessed by the people who were there. People were free to dance at a party or have an embarrassing moment and not have to worry about their behavior being broadcast for the entire world to see. A person could voice their opinion and not have to worry about being judged by the world because their conversation was recorded or taped and shared on social media. Smartphones are not only used by others to publicize things but young people are using them to share things they should not. However, smartphones can be used for positive things as well. Smartphones can be used to help students in the classroom, catching criminals, or sharing information with others far away. “In today’s time, it is almost impossible not to be influenced by the increasing technological advancements” (Tablets and Smarphones, 2013). We should be influenced by technology. Educators, parents, and student should utilize the advancements of technology to make life better not more difficult. Young people need to be taught morally acceptable ways to use smartphones. Moral character can be taught by teaching children the appropriate ways to use these devices. They should also be made aware of the negative consequences that can come from misuse of smartphones. If young people are taught self-discipline, respect, and responsibility the likely hood of them using smartphones in a negative manner would greatly decrease. Young people today are given a cell phone at a young age. This phone gives children assess to almost anything that is found on the internet. Therefore, at any time a child can look up movies or real life videos that portray sex, violence, and crime. There is very little supervision so it is up to adults to teach these young people how to have self-discipline, respect, and responsibility. Parents need to educate young people to the pros and cons of cell phones. We should help students have the self-discipline to be able to use a cell phone in class to complete assignments without doing other things on their phone during that time. We need to work together to teach children to respect themselves and others by teaching them to be careful with the type of pictures and videos that they take of others and themselves. They also need to understand that if they text someone something inappropriate it could be shared with others in the school or on social media.
