There are many different components of a classroom environment that can affect the students’ academic performance, which places a greater importance on aspects the teacher can control within the classroom, such as seating arrangements, and seat location. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the influence of seat location, and seating arrangements on student academic performance and participation within the classroom. Many researchers have debated whether seating arrangements in the classroom actually have a profound effect on student academic performance. Hence, the importance of gaining insight on the effects of classroom seating locations and its effects on student performance and behavior is stressed.

There are even educational theories such as Urie Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory, which can be applied to the research of the effects of seat location on student performance since the theory pertains to a child’s development within the context of the system of relationships that forms his or her environment. Research suggests that behavioral engagement in learning is a critical factor for predicting the students’ academic performance. Seating arrangements, which include the location of the student’s seat, have been studies from a variety of perspectives. One area of emphasis is seat location and how the location of the student’s seat effects the student’s participation within the classroom and their academic performance. According to a study conducted by Bicard and his colleagues (2012), students seating arrangements is one of the easiest, most cost-effective classroom management strategies available to teachers to maximize the learning performance and behavior. Therefore, placing a great importance on the effects of seat arrangements on student academic performance and participation in the classroom.
Wannarka and Ruhl (2008) noticed that there were many factors that were out of the teacher’s control, giving seating arrangements a higher importance since teachers can manipulate that aspect of the classroom to achieve the highest academic and behavioral performance. There has been limited research on the effects of classroom seat arrangements and location on students’ participation and performance.
