Over the last few classes we have been discussing privilege. Privilege is everywhere in today’s society, yet few people know anything about it. The definition of privilege, according to our book, is a special right or immunity. In a sense everyone has some sort of privilege, so it makes sense that this topic is important for future and current peer educators. Allowing yourself to understand what privileges you have makes you better at communicating with people who are not fortunate enough to have those privileges. It also allows you to spread your knowledge of privilege to other people, so everyone is more informed. As a peer educator myself, I see the necessity of being aware of privilege every day. I tutor students in the lower level math classes, and use my knowledge of privilege to avoid causing major blowups and communicate well with the students. At a place like Indiana State University, you see many people who were not born in America. Seeing these people makes you realize how much privilege you really had growing up. Even though there is differences in privilege between Americans, people from other countries typically have much less of these privileges compared to us. For example, people who come from countries without a good education system do not have as many opportunities for schooling. In America even the poorest areas have access to a school somewhere nearby, and state standards make sure they are being taught the same things as other schools. The funding in these schools may not be the same, and there are differences in how things are taught, but it is still available. In other countries, some children do not get the opportunity to go to school at all. In the Philippines, if a family can not afford to send their children to school, it is not required.
