The logic behind eliminating physical education or gym class seems simple, school kids will get fatter. That’s not the case, according to healthland.time.com, “One in three U.S. kids is overweight or obese, but only six states – Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, Illinois, and Iowa.”, Even with physical education, kids are still obese or overweight. Obesity and being overweight isn’t the only problem that children in America face but it’s the biggest issue among children’s health. Students may have physical education class throughout their school day, but they may not be meeting the appropriate time they need to be active during the school week. Guidelines issued by the American Heart Association and the Society of Health and Physical Educators state that school’s should have 150 minutes a week of physical activity in elementary schools, and 225 minutes of physical activity in middle and high school. According to healthland.time.com, only 4% of the U.S. follow the guidelines issued, 29% of the U.S. were considered “weak” in their guidelines, and 67% of the U.S. school districts had no physical education policies. Physical education was a big part of my life, it made me find myself, athletically, it made me look forward to something every day at school, I made friends, learned a lot about my body and how to live a healthy lifestyle.
