It is unlikely that another person has exactly the same truths as I do. What I believe as truth is shaped by my experiences and my environment. Imagine answering the simple question, “When is summer?” I would probably answer confidently that summer is in June, July, and August. This is something that I believe to be true based on decades of experience living in the northern United States. However, someone from Australia would disagree with this truth and instead believe that Summer is from December to February. In this example, it is obvious that the warmer months of the year depend on my location. Knowing that information allows me to revise what I believe to be true to include a dependence on location. I will focus one such truth that demonstrates my will to be free: “Actively being in control of my decisions gives me a sense of freedom that I enjoy.” This truth is about maintaining a sense of freedom in my life by controlling my own destiny and guarding against the illusion of control. It means that some of the time, I need to make selfish decisions to be happy and ignore other people. It forces me to think deeply about what I really want to do in life and take other people’s opinions with a grain of salt. I have to ask myself, “Why I am doing this?” The pleasure that results from this core truth is that I have more perceived freedom in my life. These new methods of viewing were a relief. If I could watch something online, I could actively make a choice based upon my interests. When I watch YouTube videos, I do it because the content is attractive and it is something I enjoy viewing. I am able to control what I allow myself to watch. With cable TV, it can be a much more passive approach. Whenever I wanted to watch cable, I was always a slave to the TV guide and many times ended up scrolling through the channels until I found something I could tolerate. I might even watch a movie for the second or third time just because nothing else is on at the time. This is something that is harder to do with a product like Netflix. If I wanted to watch a movie again, I would have to make a conscious decision to do so and convince myself that the movie was really that good and deserves a second look. These situations where I am allowed to control my behavior and make more active decisions make me feel much more
