For centuries, women have not been valued and respected; through the ages they have had limitations and restrictions put on them. In the 1900s women tried to take a stand—reminding the world what they are capable of. However, as of lately, media has been using its influence to set impossible standards and restrictions for the women of America, portraying them for what they are not: dainty, weak, pathetic, and platonic. Just when women seemed to be making progress; the world is--yet again--telling women who they are, or should be. Mass media is especially harmful to women, because it creates negative perceptions of women, and reinforces those on a daily basis. There is no escaping it— it is everywhere: television, films, videos, billboards, magazines, movies, music, newspapers, fashion designers, and the Internet. If we—the women of America—refuse to stand strong and embrace our individuality, we will have our value and worth stripped from us, and replaced with brokenness, guilt, and worthlessness. We are not an item that can be bought in a store; therefore, we should never allow ourselves to be compared to such. We cannot let the media manipulate us any longer, and tell us what our purpose is.

The topic of sex has become twisted and abused with women: from using sex to sell a product, to making a woman’s natural urge for sex seem wrong and incredibly dirty. Women are expected to be both virginal, yet unbelievably sexy; a balance which is impossible to pull off. Depending on what a girl is wearing, she will be judged, and assumptions will be made. Either she is a “promiscuous slut” who is obviously desperate for attention, or she is an uptight “prude” who is of course, a virgin. The media is constantly promoting these stereotypical beliefs; they are implying—yet again—that females only worth is superficial and appearance
