What is Internet Privacy?

As we all know, the social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, has become more and more popular. People could create their profile and share their blogs, photos or videos to their friend on the social networking sites. They think it would be their privacy since they share only to the people they know. However, they were totally wrong. Privacy does not have a single definition and it is a concept that is not easily defined. Information privacy is an individual's claim to control the terms under which personal information is acquired, disclosed, and used [9]. In the context of privacy, personal information includes any information relating to or traceable to an individual person [ 1]. Privacy can be defined as a fundamental human right; thus, privacy protection which involves the establishment of rules governing the collection and handling of personal data can be seen as a boundary line as how far society can intrude into a person's affairs.
Privacy has always been a key personal right for many people. People need that personal space or bubble to themselves that nobody else can penetrate. They want to know that their personal information stays personal, and out of reach of other people. What happens to all their information that is used and posted on the internet? The internet lacks security and legislation when it comes to email providers, search engines, and social networking sites. This has led some people to use private peer-to-peer communication networks such as Freenet and BitTorrent.
In today’s society I believe that Americans truly enjoy the last piece of their privacy that they have left. There isn’t much left that is private these days. Everything or everyone is being monitored to a certain degree. Your moves on the internet are being followed, you might very well have your phone conversations listened into, and your grocery store purchases are also being recorded.
The government gives each American citizen a set of unalienable rights that protect them from the government’s power. These rights cannot be broken, yet the government violates the Fourth Amendment daily to find ways to spy on the American public under the guise of protecting against terrorism. In 2007 President Obama said the American administration “acts like violating civil liberties is the way to enhance our securities – it is not.” Americans need to understand that their privacy is worth the fight. The people need to tell their neighbors, their congressmen, and their senators that they will not allow their internet privacy to be violated by needless spying. American citizens deserve the rights given to them and need to fight for the right to keep them by changing privacy laws to include Internet privacy.
If a stranger would approach someone on the street, would one casually offer personal information to him? Would one allow him to follow and record one’s activities? Although it may be obvious in the concrete world that one would not allow it, the behavior of the general population on the Internet is strikingly different. While surfing websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google, many people provide personal details to enhance their online profile? These websites retain vast amounts of personal information from their users. Although this practice benefits the user as well, unrestricted profiling can become an alarming catastrophe. Unless the threat to internet users privacy are shown to exceed the benefits, we should not regulate the internet, rather we should educate the public how to be more responsible about their identities.
Social medias have become a big part of our society now, they are being used in all aspects of our life. We are connected twenty-four hours a day, at work, school, home, shopping etc. There is a necessity, a need to be connected to these social media’s, to feel like you are a part of society. With these growing numbers in being connected to social media’s on the web, there comes a growing desire for privacy and safety. In this paper I will discuss and analyze the social media’s themselves, the dangers that arise from them, and how all these correlate to privacy.

According to a survey by the Pew Research Center’s Internet Project & American Life, 80 % of the users go to the effort to change their settings to private. With the increasing awareness of cyber – crime and the need for privacy, users have now started to rethink their actions online. Moreover, the government can search private citizens data without warrant or cause. Also, companies are not only collecting internet user data but also selling it. The companies and agencies who commit such crimes should be fined or either closed down. In closing, the privacy and security of individuals on the internet should be upheld by the United States government.
John C. Dvorak, author of “Privacy and Social Media”, argues about how many people are so unconcerned with their privacy. He states, “This amuses me because it seems as if the majority of Facebook users don't even know about or care about the privacy settings” (Dvorak). This argument of definition brings up the debate of the multiple definitions of privacy. For example, an individual who applies to Dvorak’s statement might have a definition of privacy as something very open and simple. However, someone else who may be applying for jobs may think of privacy as a much more serious concept. Therefore, the debate over what is “private” information means nothing due to the fact that everyone’s definition of privacy is different. Once everybody agrees on a worldwide definition of privacy then this issue can be debated and solved
Social Media sites such as Facebook, today have made precautions regarding privacy on the web. These settings to help keep the users privacy in check. Even though they settings on sites have gotten more intense, can theses protection possibly cause more problems? According to “Mark Zuckerberg’s Theory of privacy” the website was created with the intention to create “a more open and connected world.” There are advantages to having a more connected word there are also some draw backs. The communication between users is informational, interactive, and also educational. However, unfortunately, most social networking sites keep track of all the interactions that take place, and this is a concern about Internet privacy for Facebook, Twitter, Google, and other social media users. Not only do they keep track of all interactions by the users, they also own all the content, including pictures that the users upload. The social network keeps this information on the user, even if the user deactivates their account with that particular site. Most users do not have any idea that the operator of the networking service keeps this information, and has access to all pictures and tags. By not having adequate security...
