The importance of conserving dipterocarp species

Introduction Dipterocarp term is derived from Greek word which means two-winged fruit (di = two, pteron = wing and karpos = fruit). Dipterocarp are tropical plant so the distribution of dipterocarp tree species mostly located in Borneo Island, Peninsular Malaysia, Southern Thai, Indonesia, Indochina and some places in India and also Sri Lanka. The most diverse dipterocarp can be find on the island of Borneo with 300 species approximately. Dipterocarp divided into 17 genera and there several genera that popular to dipterocarp for example Shorea, Hopea, Dipterocarp and the Vatica. Each other have their own importance for example, HDF is very important for water catchment in ecological process. Mostly water that became the rivers originate from this area. During rain, HDF help this ecological process by trap the rain and then channel it into the river. HDF also acting as natural reservoirs and natural filter system that not only store the water but also help cleaned the water from sediments and silts. If no HDF, first landslide and second thing is the river full with silts and sediments. Landslide occur when no more rooting system from the trees to help support and clutch the composition of soils, make soils easily broke. The leaves of HDF can prevents rain contact directly with the soil and slow down the speed of raindrops. If no leaves of HDF in this area, the soils are easily weaken and more sediment carried by the raindrops. Sediments and silts carried by the water surface runoff and accumulate in the rivers.
