Film in the media industry carries a significant influence towards their audience that helps project many messages based on certain topics. Critical Race Theory (CRT) makes it clear that racial issues still exist and are very present within the media, especially in the movies shown today. The use of storytelling helps display hegemony, where white people are portrayed as superior and even though society likes to say that racism has ended the media still depicts a lot of racial issues. Counter-storytelling is used in Critical Race Theory in order to contradict racist characterizations of society, it challenges the stories that are reinforced by hegemony. It is more common to find movies that show white supremacy than to see movies that explore the themes with people of color being superior and equal just as the white people are displayed. In the two modern day films In Time and Elysium, both movies reflect many aspects about racial issues dealing with culture, class, and ethnicity.
In Time (2011) is a film based on a future society where people are genetically modified to stop aging at twenty five and after that a clock is activated with one more year for each citizen. Time is a currency and the wealthy that live in New Greenwich are close to being immortals, while the poor live in the ghettos with their time zones being exploited and are forced to live with a few hours or days, while they need to work, borrow, beg or steal to stay alive. Thieves steal time and the timekeepers control the society but nobody, including the rich, is doing anything to help those in need. ... people and even though it is a diverse society there is a ruling class that dominates and manipulates their views and accepted beliefs to be the norm. This is evident in both films as white supremacy is exposed through counter-story telling, proving through both characters that take actions which speak for people of color because it takes away the linkage that people of color are more “prone” to commit crimes. CRT has an ultimate goal in creating social justice and that will be an ongoing battle that little by little will be won once CRT spreads so society can be blind to color and give equal opportunities to everyone not just be a privilege to those who are white. So, hopefully one day there will be movies that will share stories and messages to its audience that color does not define a person and that everyone truly has the opportunity to be the hero and succeed.

Race-thinking: what is it? Isn’t the world past the issue of race? Do races even exist and if so, what does it mean to have a racial identity? Is colorblindness possible and how important is it? These are the questions Paul Taylor addresses in the book “Race: A Philosophical Introduction”. Paul Taylor is a self-proclaimed “radical constructionist” who will maintain that race is very real in our world and in the United States as a whole (p. 80). Taylor takes care to ensure he addresses the real needs concerning racial dynamics in the U.S., referencing historical events, prevailing policy affairs, and even pop culture to explain that everyone capable of forming opinions ought to have some sort of grasp of the concept of race-thinking. As Taylor will analyze, race and race-thinking “has shaped and continues to shape private interactions as well as the largest political choices” (p. 8). In other words, race-thinking encompasses everything we do and every interaction we have. In this paper I will attempt to interpret and expound Taylor’s views and definitions of race, concepts associated with race, and input my own interpretations as they are appropriate.

Throughout the years and generations, the word “stereotype” has become one of the most common used terms in today’s society. It is defined as a general idea, which allows society to oversimplify an individual’s appearance, ethnicity, the way he/she might look and many other facts that can be added to this term. In the article The Offensive Movie Cliché That Won’t die, by Matt Zoller Seitz’s, the author emphasizes the idea of the Magical Negro character that is often presented in the media and real life illustrations. Seitz also points out how Black characters in media are usually displayed in a positive way but in reality, it just benefits White characters. However, this creates a stereotypical problem, which causes a dehumanization between characters of color in the industry of films. This central idea can apply to "Asian Women in Film: No Joy no Luck ", written by Jessica Hagedorn. Hagedorn writes about the stereotypical portrayals of Asian women in film. She analyses some films of women that are frequently created by White American filmmakers, and are mistreated in a negative way because of their gender. As result, this creates a racial myth and increases the social tension, which could lead to a dehumanization of people of color and women.
One of the biggest issues depicted in the film is the struggle of minority groups and their experience concerning racial prejudice and stereotyping in America. One of the more prevalent themes of this movie is racism, and how prejudicial mindsets ultimately lead to one’s own demise. This was especially evident when they were being pulled over by a racist white cop. She felt that he could have done more to defend their rights instead of accepting injustice. There is also a Persian store owner, who feels that he is getting the short end of the stick in American society because his store was robbed multiple times. Then the Hispanic locksmith encounters racial slurs and discrimination, although he just wanted to keep his family safe. The partnered detectives and lovers of different races, one is a Hispanic woman and the other is a black male, who are dealing with his drug addicted mother who feels that he does not care enough about taking care of his family. In this movie, discrimination and prejudice are the cause of all kinds of collisions. We easily prejudge people with stereotypes, and we are concerned with our pre-thoughts of what kind of person he/she should be, we forget to actually get to know them. It is human nature to have some type of prejudices in one way or another; we fear the unknown. There are stereotypes that black people are angry or tend to be violent; white people feel they are the dominant race and discriminate against all; Asians are thought to be poor or ignorant, and people with higher economic statuses are distinguished to the working class
The White Savior Complex is a damaging subconscious underlay of the Hollywood system, and more broadly all of western society. It is used to further separate the notions of “us” and “other” by creating a firm separation fueled by self-righteousness, and a sense of entitlement. Hollywood attempts to address race relations, but fails because of this trope. Kingsle, from the article “Does My Hero Look White In This?” described that both racism and colonialism are acknowledged, but not without reassuring that not only were white people against the system of racist power dynamics, but also were actively fighting against it in leadership roles (2013). In the remainder of my essay I will be commenting on many modern films and their use on this trope, and why subscribing to this filmmaking strategy is problematic.
The movie “In Time” takes place in a world where time has become the currency. People use time ultimately to stay alive, to pay for rent, and pay for foods and goods. Once you hit the age of 25, you stop aging but you’re genetically engineered to live only one more year unless you can buy your way out of it. The people who live the longest are the wealthiest people, they can live forever and are essentially immortal. The rest of the people who live in the ghettos live day by day by working very low paying jobs, stealing or begging for time. When the clock on the persons arm hits zero they die. Time on these clocks has become the universal currency; by touching arms, one person can transfer it to another, or to or from a separate clock that can be shipped or safely stored in a "time bank". The country is divided into "time zones" based on the wealth of its population. We have a saying that many people use today “Time is money” but in this movie Time is literally money. “In time” relates to the topic of macroeconomics greatly. This movie brings up many topics in economics such as distribution of wealth, labor force, scarcity and inflation. It shows us how differently people look at the economy when the currency is no longer physical money and how there is a separation in the rich and poor.
