The concept of immortality changes between each person. Some may say as long as one's cells live, the being lives. While others believe that as long as the person thrives in their minds, the being achieves immortality. The simplified understanding of immortality involves a being who achieves the ability to live forever. In Rebecca Skloot's contemporary biography, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, the concept of immortality remains present as a constant reminder of the differences between the beliefs of the Lacks and the scientists by utilizing the rhetorical device, pathos, to connect to the characters and understand what they feel by developing emotions with each word.

The beliefs of the Lacks family heavily influences their interpretation of the concept of immortality. Despite the truth of the remaining cancer cells, the family chooses to believe that Henrietta becomes "chosen by the Lord" to come back as an angel or "immortal being" in order to save people from disease (296). Skloot reveals that even though a loved one may pass away, they can live on through positive thoughts about them. The scientists rely on their studies and work to form a hypothesis on what the concept of immortality truly means. Skloot reveals the key to achieve immortality in the scientist's point of view :"That lady has achieved true immortality, both in the test-tube and in the hearts and minds of scientists...(175)" To become immortal requires the being to thrive in a test tube according to scientists which leads to the feeling of dehumanizing the actual person the cells originate from.
